Where does it come from? It's an Old World spice, much used in Central Asia, India, the Near East, and the southern Med. Formerly much used in Roman and Byzantine cooking.
Who took it to Mexico? The 3 main early routes for new foods in/out of the Americas were Spain-Mexico, Africa-Brazil, Philippines-Mexico. The last doesn't seem so likely for a cumin route. |
