Just how dumb can the news media be when the San Francisco TV station
listed the names of the pilots of the crashed aircraft.

One of many links
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-n...v-over-2056462
San Francisco's KTVU Channel 2 news incorrectly named the crew of the
doomed Boeing 777, which crashed killing three people, as Sum Ting
Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk and Bang Ding Ow

Didn't anyone look at the copy? No one thought it was a joke? The
talking head just read the names as if they were real. Another person
had to actually type the names to appear on the screen too.

I can understand the joke when we were in junior high about Won Hung
Lo, but this takes it to a much higher level of dumbness.

What makes me really laugh is the article's description of it as being
'sickening'. LOL. With the way they're (faux) reacting, you'd think
they were also responsible for Auschwitz.

"Asiana has decided to sue KTVU-TV to "strongly respond to its
racially discriminatory report" that disparaged Asians, spokeswoman
Lee Hyomin said"

The airline isn't any better, apparently.

Just goes to show how unintelligent, humourless and hysterical the
media is. Much like modern society, I suppose.

While I've never heard this particular "joke", it just goes to show
how little critical thinking is done in the race to be first to file a
breaking news report.

I think I saw an e-mail joke with these names before the TV incident, so
your guess is probably correct.

I'm not sure how much thinking went into making that call. If you
can't figure it is a joke, you are really DUMB. I can also see
someone on the other end saying "yep, that is the right names". I'd
have done that if I got the call. I've done worse.

It is the local FAUXNews outlet. Who's surprised?

Fox news is quite different from Faux news on cable - at least around
here. KTVU has been a local favorite for decades, not sure why or how
that thing happened - but I'll start by blaming it on the streamlining
that comes with a modern news room.

It was so ridiculous. They actually called the NTSB and got some intern
to confirm those were the names. NO ONE out of all those people could
tell that was a joke?

It was completely stupid. This is one reason I do not like watching the
news. Doesn't anyone fact-check anymore? Hours after the crash CNN was
streaming comments from Facebook and Twitter feeds by alledged witnesses
as "facts". Come on, what news organization thinks social media = reality?

I was sitting in a car repair shop during the CNN report of that crash.
I never heard them mention any names at that time. It must have come
out later. I don't usually watch CNN especially in a mechanics waiting
room but the owner of the shop mentioned that the plane came from her
country, Korea, so she was interested in watching the details. As for
myself, I was sitting there lamenting the fact that my visit to their
shop cost me $1200. Stupid computer sensors in cars. What good do they
do?

The primary function of having the engine controlled by a computer is to
control exhaust emissions into the air. The more sensors in the system,
the more data the computer has to control the burning of fuel and the
more opportunity there is to make some serious money by replacing them.

These sensors were for the ABS and simply "brakes". The sensors are on
a part that cost $700 and couldn't be replaced without replacing that
part. I had my brake parts replaced only about 2 years ago but when
those alarms popped up on my dashboard I was like, what? Come to find
out it was just the sensors that were malfunctioning. I guess I had to
fix those to later tell me when they really are malfunctioning. I have
no idea, it just cost me a bundle to fix it. I really liked the shop
owner though. She drove me home so I wouldn't have to wait while they
got the part in and replaced it which took about 4 hours. Then she came
and got me.

Like I told her I'd rather pay for repairs rather than trade this in for
a new vehicle and pay monthly payments. It's still a good truck. I
haven't made payments since it was paid off in 2010.

Interesting. What kind of truck do you have? I'd like to find out more
about the brakes. Thanks.

And don't forget ESC (Electronic Stability Control) that helps keep
you safe.

Most every function in a car is now computer controlled. When you
flip a switch for the headlights, you are not turning on the lights as
you did years ago. Now, you are sending a request to the computer to
turn the lights on and then the computer does so.

It works the Climate Control if you have that, the rain sensing
wipers, etc.

Really. Rain sensing wipers now? They've almost thought of everything.

ESC is the most significant advance in automobile safety in recent years
and most people are unaware that it exists or what it does.

The automobile makers are aware that the public is crazy about new
technology and will pay to get it. I mean, who the heck doesn't want
voice actuated head rests? I can't wait for self-driving cars.

My new car has push button ignition and I had to teach myself to
just push the button and let go, not hold it in like it's going
to start like you would with a key.

Well not be redundant yet again..but one of my few pals jockeys triple sevens over the Pacific for a living. He claims it takes hitting only three buttons for a safe trip. Button one is pressed for take off..button two is for landing..button three signals the Stewardess to step and fetch him a Coke or Scotch and water etc. He thinks maybe One Hung Low pushed the wrong button at an inopportune time..or out of sequence etc. Did they ever figger out how many of the casualties got sent off to Nirvana from getting run over by the slab savers in the big red fire trucks? Some of this stuff is puzzling.

One teenage girl was run over by emergency equipment. She was covered
in foam retardant at the time. As yet, autopsy hasn't determined what
killed her. the crash or the vehicle. She had been seated in the rear
of the plane where the most damage was sustained.

Airport firefighting trucks are usually a bright green colour.

High visibility and all that.

The rear of the plane was always a favourite spot of my MIL.... she used to
say "I haven't heard of anyone backing a plane into a mountain as yet!" :-)

Assassination of Snowden informants. It is a conspiracy. I am still trying to get an inquisition device out of my back the CIA stuck there US doctors cannot identify.

I hate TV. I live it.

News is just a form of reality TV based entertainment these days. Hard
reporting is dangerous and will get more dangerous with time. It also
tends to irritate sponsors and the all-powerful government.

Most of the news you read or see on TV is churned out by a few interns
with communications degrees. Folks these days are too dumb (for the
most part) to question the TV and news media, so why bother with the
facts? If it's printed, it's as good as true for almost all of the
people who absorb these news items.

The current state of the news media reflects the current level of
public discourse in the USA. I stopped being surprised at this sort of
stuff back in the 1990s, when it was clear to me that the news had
slowly been going down the toilet for a decade before I even really
noticed.

That's just wong. Sorry, couldn't resist. Agree, I can't believe the
media would actually read that without comprehending. Just goes to show
you the IQ level required to be an on-air news anchor.

I saw it on one of my RSS feeds. I did get a slight chuckle out of it
but here's what I know about news media:

They'll do the LEAST amount of checking on a story, particularly
televison news media. They're pretty easy to game too. Don't ask me how
I know that.
