Every once in awhile I crave a Hostess cupcake. I'll have a couple
and that's it for another year or so.

Hopefully, they will be better than before the shutdown. The old
Twinkies had degraded to the point where the strawberry and banana
Twinkies were barely dicernable from the regular Twinkies, which are
no great treat.

Exactly. They taste like vegetable oil and sugar. The only reason people think the cupcakes are chocolate is because they are brown. Twinkies have some vague chemical taste. Little Debbie are cheaper and better, but still not as good as they used to be.

I like a Ring Ding or a Yodel now and again, but I don't
see any mention of Drake's Cakes. Perhaps they will show
up later in the year.

The Twinkie supply is safe around me. I liked them when I
was a kid.

My mom used to pack a single-wrapped Hostess cupcake in my lunch box
along with my PB sandwich. Also a snack bag of Lay's potato chips. I'm
sure I have not eaten a Hostess cupcake or Twinkie since around 1970. I
definitely don't get cravings for them.

The Orange Hostess cupcakes are as rare as kangaroos around here. I buy
them when they somehow fall of the production line and accidentally get
shipped to a store. They're like the holy grail of snack cakes.

Wow! If Little Debbie's are better then I *never* want to eat a Hostess
product again! Have not had one since I was a kid and didn't like them
then. I did try one Little Debbie thing after my friend told me how
addictively good they were. It was a chocolate peanut butter bar. Not good
to me at all! Tasted like chemicals and fat. Icky fat.

I'm wondering how distribution will go. Before, hostess delivery trucks,
Separate isolated shelves for hostess products. Hostess outlets gone for
good.

Oh no, you poor deprived thing! (laugh) Oh, I see that Drake's Cake
might be taken over by Mckee Foods.

Anyway, do you have snack cake brands in Scotland? Ring Dings are
chocolate cake with undefinable white cream filling, covered in
chocolate, puck shaped. Yodels are the same only they are rolled like
Swiss Rolls.

Twinkies are little individual sponge cakes with some sort of faux cream

This is the only Hostess brand I care about: "while its Beefsteak
bread brand was snatched up by Grupo Bimbo, S.A.B. de C.V." That is
my go-to favorite bread, so I hope I see it on the shelves soon.

We go back and forth between garage sales, ebay store and
'exhibition'-- If she wasn't 'saving the world', my wife was
shopping. and she didn't care if it was a flea market, or
Hammacher Schlemmer-- the odder, the better.

My son wanted some of those, so I bought a box. I must say that the
cake part was better but needed more filling.

Maybe we have but to be honest it isn't something I would ever notice or
look for! I haven't heard of any of those though! I don't really have much
of a sweet tooth and I would never buy cakes anyway. BUT at least I now
have an idea about what you are talking about, so thank you ma'am ... <g>

Ditto. Not that I ever really ate these after I was a kid. I seem to
recall thinking the filling was actual cream until the mid-1960's. I
could be wrong about that. It was a long time ago.

I am not familiar with the Drake's Cakes brand. It's good to know that
people still believe in manufacturing snack cakes in this jaded, health
conscientious world. I brought a box of Twinkie-like product that's made
with a red velvet cake substance. It's a great idea but I haven't found
that perfect time to eat one. It's possible that there will never be a
perfect time to eat it. I left it on the front seat of my truck and now
I'm not sure where it's at. :-)

Hmm looking at the ads I don't think they could have real fresh cream ...

It's not cream and, as far as I know, it never was - cream is not stable
enough to have a shelf-life of months. The filling is a whipped
frosting. Frosting as we all know, is shortening and sugar.

OTOH, Dream Whip frosting is probably oil and sugar and emulsifiers and
stabilizers. I like it more than regular frosting because it has more
air in it. It might be great in a Twinkie but again, it's lacks
shelf-life stability.

Once in a while I'd see the Ring Dings or maybe even Funny Bones
and I'd pick up a box. No, this is not health food.

When you find it, if it's worthy of being compared to Twinkies, it will
still be fine for consumption.

Me too. Those orange ones were good occasionally.

I never liked the Twinkies as a kid but I did start liking them later on in
life. And...in a pinch, just add some sweetened strawberries to a couple of
Twinkies and you have instant strawberry shortcake. Not the best but if
you need something quick -

Devil Dogs - are you kidding me? If that ain't the greatest name for a
snack cake, it oughta be.

Funny Bones? Your world has great names for snacks. Brilliant!

I think they called "Red Velvet Snack Cakes" what a letdown!

I can live without Twinkies-I was always a Susie Q fan. The Christmas
before they went bankrupt my mom introduced me to Hostess Fruitcake. It
was phenomenol. Next year I tried many stores and no one was selling
any. That's the one I miss. I don't like most fruitcakes. I think theirs
was more solid/less bread, had more nuts, and was stickier than most. We
liked it cold out of the fridge. Sliced like hard cheese.

Sorry to hear of your fruitcake problem. My suggestion is that you try a
Costco fruitcake that's sold during the holidays. It's a three and a
half pound giant that's chock full of pineapples, cherries, and pecans.
I still got half of one in the back of my refrigerator. At this rate, I
might finish it by September of this year. It's a solid mass and a
little gooey - you'll either love it or think it's disgusting.

Have not had a Twinkie or a Ding Dong in many years, but as soon as I
heard they were closing the factory, I wanted one. I went into two
stores and they were both sold out. One of my nieces heard about it and
she gave me some, I thought that was sweet.

Your reaction was much different from mine. I tried a Twinkie when I was
in high school in the mid 1960s. I didn't like it and never had
another. It didn't bother me at all to hear that they had met their end.

You were smarter than I, the Ding Dong was a disappointment.

What about Sno Balls? I haven't had one since I was a kid - but maybe
that's a good thing.

I've never had one. That neon-pink color and pokey bits of coconut
never set my heart on fire. ;o)

As you know, I'm a total coconut fan and love chocolate. I don't even
remember Sno Balls being neon. I remember them coming in packages of
two - so my BFF and I shared... one for each. I may even try making
them someday. http://kokocooks.com/2012/02/homemade-sno-balls/

I'm obviously no expert, but I thought they came one pink and one
white to a package?
