Know what bothers me about this article?

"The deli sat dark Friday evening, with its familiar white and red neon
sign gone black and the front door locked *in the hours* after workers
learned their sad fate.

Jose Robles, manager of longtime competitor Carnegie Deli, said he heard
from his Stage counterpart that the owners broke the bad news around 7
a.m. Friday."

Way to give your employees notice, assholes! Sorry for the loss of a
"landmark" but they could have given these folks more notice so they
could look for other jobs. Sheesh.

It's very possible that the owners hadn't made the final decision more
than a few hours before.

I'm fairly confident they knew the place was in trouble more than 12
hours before shutting down.

What--you know some of the owners?

I think your confidence is misplaced. There's any number of good
reasons to assume they were fighting to find investors, silent partners
and such up until the last minute. It's a pretty old institution. I
assume the last few weeks were filled with endless jockeying.

I'll agree with all that, but surely the employees knew something was
up? If not, they should have been warned. I place like that, some of
those folks probably worked there for years. Now they're all out on
their asses. Hopefully they had something else lined up.

But we don't know what, if anything, they did for the employees. Maybe
they got huge severance packages.

It is also best to cut a place quick to prevent problems. You don't
want a disgruntled, soon to be unemployed, cook or server getting
revenge and end up with a hundred sick customers.

Now some nit-picking, anal-retentive nutcase can ask if they are gone or
"truly gone".... and what the difference would be.

That would be interesting, check it out and report back, Andy.

Kosher delis are disappering, they go out of business because the
foods have become too pricy for most folk's pocket and the health
departments crack down on their prep methods, which still require they
use the old methods in order to produce the same products that people
are used to.. much of that food prep requires fermentation at
temperatures above what modern health codes dictate. Most of the food
prep methods are not written anywhere so when the old owners pass on
they take their secrets with them.

It's easy to check the local health departments violations in OC. I do
it for grins every few months. My favorite places have been shut down
on occasion, but not for anything really egregious.

If the 2nd Ave Deli could reopen on 33rd, anything is possible.
