Default Valentine

I was guilt ridden by Cheryl's Valentine's cake and my callous disregard
for the meaning of the day. I usually just chuck a box of Whitman's on
the counter. So I chucked the Whitman's on the counter and served my

For presentation, I should have skewered the lobster tail before
broiling and basted the lobster, mushrooms and asparagus with butter
before shooting the picture. She really liked the meal, and that's all
that counts.
My meal was minus the lobster and three times more mushrooms on a bigger
piece of tenderloin.

The only negative thing I can say is Whitman's sucks, altho your
lovely dinner makes up for it.

Your meal looked good BTW. I think I would have peeled the asparagus
(more?) and served the lobster on another plate but that's just me.

Looks fine but really needed a holiday garnish, even is some red
radish roses. I'd have made tiny roses from red bell pepper strips,
takes less than five minutes

I have a serious lobster deficit. Last year V-day was 4 days after I
broke my arm. This year, my wife is on chemotherapy, and her tastes
are messed up. As soon as she gets here sense of taste back, I owe
her *two* lobsters.

I like crab meat better than lobster...a little more *tang* to it. But I
have yet to try Dungeness. I'm waiting for a sale and I'd like to try it.

Overpriced, probably depending on where you live. Bland??!! NO!!!!
Yummy and very distinctive in flavor and texture! Unless you get not
so good lobster, like rock lobster, or badly/overcooked lobster, which
is akin to cooking prime steak well done! Ugh! :-(

With all due respect, John....lobster is "not all that."

I used to live in New England (1970-71) and we could buy them at the docks,
right off the boats that morning for $1 per pound. My 18th birthday dinner
was an 8 pounder caught that morning.

Don't get me wrong. Lobster is good but not compared to other shellfish
like crabs, oysters, clams, etc.

Try eating all of the above plain with no butter or spices and you'll see
what I mean.

That said....it's been years since I've eaten lobster so I miss it. Maybe
this June I'll have one for my birthday again. Prices as they are though,
it won't be another 8 pound one, that's for sure.

I love all seafood. Oysters on the 1/2 shell, shrimp, lobster.
crayfish (or mudbugs if you prefer!), crabs, scallops, etc. When I was
a kid I discovered fried shrimps! Mmmmm! Those were my faves, until my
mother and father and I took a vacation to Chicago and stayed at a
fancy hotel. I was 8 or 9. And as we were on vacation, they let me get
the lobster from the hotel's restaurant's menu! OMG I had a new fave!
After that I'd always get the lobster for my birthday dinner.

Give me all the lobster you don't want! :-)

Just a note on the chemo crap. My wife has finished it up- and had
her surgery. [radiation will begin as soon as her strength is back]
Then the next week she was looking paler than normal, and was very
tired. Also running a very low grade fever. [99 something]

The surgeon poo-pooed her and said she was fine-- and told her to stop
taking her temp. [the surgeon's own discharge papers said 'take temp
daily' - it wasn't my wife, an RN for 40 years, looking for trouble.]

Anyway- we figure that's just par for the course--- until 2 days later
when she starts crapping blood. After she's admitted and gets a few
pints of blood, and an anti-biotic on board the gastro guy says that
*GI bleeds are fairly common after chemo.*

Ferchristsakes, man-- that surgeon could have ordered some bloodwork a
week earlier and saved her patient a ton of pain, and the insurance
company a ton of money.

Just wanted to say-- 'if your wife starts showing signs of being extra
tired-- it ain't gonna break the bank to run a blood test to rule out
a GI bleed'.

On the one hand, my wife has gotten excellent care-- the oncologist
and his staff were excellent and got the job done. The surgeon did a
great cutting job and all the scans indicate that she got everything.
But neither of them had a clue about the other's world-- and if it
wasn't surgery or oncology, they were both clueless and referred her
back to her GP.
