Default New dishwasher

I finally settled on a dishwasher and had it installed today. I think
it will work out fine. I really like the size of the flatware bin. It
has removable covers but I can't see using them often unless the spray
of the jets starts pushing lighter pieces out.

Now I have to settle on a new stove.

I hope you like, but for myself, GE doesn't darken my door. I've
never had an appliance from them that gave good service. You might
fare better, I hope so.

I am looking at the GE models because it is one of the discounts from
work. Nicely discounted. I hope my experience is better than yours.
Bummer about that.

Can you get extended warranties?

My GE Profile gas stove is excellent... I like my GE Profile fridge
too. But I didn't like the GE dishwasher, I love my Maytag... and
whatever brand be sure you get the stainless steel interior.

Hmmm... All of my appliances are G.E. and I've had no problems with them.
The stove is about 7 years old now.

As a counterpoint, we've (and my brother and his wife, as well) had our best
experiences ever with several GE Profile appliances.

For us, Maytag has been the disaster brand, particularly dishwashers. 8(

The best dishwasher I've owned was a GE Potscrubber. The worst crap
appliances are Frigidaire (made by Electrolux) I have them now. The
stove and dishwasher don't give me trouble, but I absolutely hate my
refrigerator and I pray that it dies so I can get a new one. It's built
out garbage.

The freezer and door shelves break. The ice maker switch freezes in the
"crushed" position even though we never use crushed ice. It's a
side-by-side (I didn't want it) and it's too deep for me to ever find
anything. The freezer side is totally useless for anything other than
the faulty ice maker. It holds less than the tiny freezer on my RV.

I want it to die. I want a new one. DH won't buy one unless this one breaks.

It sure sounds "broken" to me! Vee haff vaes uv moking diss hoppen.
Would he be better convinced if the condenser quit? A razor blade to
the seals could easily be an $800 fix and he'd never know it was

You might be able to encase the freezer coils in a thick coating of ice
by leaving the freezer ajar overnight. Once that happens, the unit won't
be able to cool unless you unplug it for 12 hours or so to defrost the
coils. All you have to do is say "Honey, the refrigerator doesn't seem
to be working, can you check it out for me? It's been acting funny for
the last several months and now it's starting to smell awful."

I've got a Samsung unit and highly recommend you check one of those out.
Good luck!

Looks good to me, I like ss interior. Being brand new, it should be
whisper quiet too. So, if you're used to an old model be prepared to
be amazed.

Oh, I was! The plumber started it up to make sure it drained properly
and I could barely hear it.

I'm kind of leaning toward this one. I like the fact that the lower
element is hidden from being dripped on. That's one problem I face with
my current electric oven. I like the simple controls, and I really like
the big window. Current oven doesn't have a window or an interior light.

Windows are a good feature, that way you don't have to open the door
unless you're checking the temperature. I see it's self cleaning, but
I've never heard of an oven steam cleaning itself. How does it make
the steam? I say: if it makes cleaning your oven easier, go for it!

I think the steam is just a pretreat. I have to look into that more
before I buy one. That makes it sound like it needs a water supply.

That steam cleaning thing got me to read the manual--
http://products.geappliances.com/Mar...49-80591-1.pdf

I'd be asking the salesman for his spin, but it looks like there is a
depression in the bottom of the oven that you fill with water. I.e. -
IMO 'steam clean' looks like pure gimmick. Maybe there is more to it
than that.

I love my self-clean. [especially on a cold winter morning] If it
wasn't there it wouldn't be a deal killer, though. Continuous
clean *would* be. We used to call them 'continuous dirty' because
they were impossible to keep clean.

I see you belong to that 'electric' religion.<g> I'm a gas person,
myself-- but I suppose we can't help ourselves.

I can't make the conversions to BTU's, but in general terms, I will
say that the thing I like best about my current stove is that it has 5
burners-- and the little one on high is about equivalent to the big
one on low. [the other 3 are mediums] It has one heck of
a range so I can simmer a tiny pot- or bring a big one to a boil in a
hurry.

That's where I'll start when I need to look for a new one. [self
clean, 3 oven racks, ease of cleaning the top -- all contenders.]

I don't envy you at all on this quest-- Even though when it is all
over I'm usually happy with the result-- I hate the 'shopping' part.
Good luck-

Jim

Two questions about the stove you are considering. Are you sure you want
the controls on the backsplash? And - how much more would it cost to have
a warming drawer instead of a storage drawer on the bottom? Polly

My stove has a warming drawer. I missed the storage drawer for a
while. I use the warming drawer *very* rarely. [especially because
the oven goes as low as 170F]

But on the rare occasions I *do* use it, I'm glad to have it.

Another thing to remember to check on your new stove-- range of oven
temp. Mine goes 170-550 and I use both extremes frequently. I
think my last one was 200-500 or thereabouts.

The controls were my first thought. I do not like the idea of having
to reach over hot pots and pans. On the other hand if you have small
children in the house or visiting often somewhere out of their reach
would be a good idea.

That's what I've always had and never a problem. I'm 5'8" so not
vertically challenged most of the time.

I actually prefer the storage drawer. My kitchen is very small and the
more storage I have the better.

I'd prefer gas for most things if I had an option. Especially for the
furnace. It took me a while to get used to an electric oven and I
haven't baked much since being in this house. Might change that with a
new oven.

What was wrong with your old one?

Mostly cosmetic as opposed to functional problems. The wheels on the
upper rack kept coming off, and the wheels on the lower rack were
starting to come off. They were easily put back on but I was getting
tired of it.

> How many cycles does it have?

I can't remember as I only used one - the economy mode. It's gone now.
A freecycler in my town had posted asking if anyone had a used one and
it was good timing since I'd just paid for the new one and was about to
schedule the plumber. So the plumber put it outside and the lady who
asked for it came to pick it up the same day. I did disclose the
problems with the wheels on the racks.
