Default Off to Scranton tomorrow morning!

The Roadside Fans mailing list is having a get-together
at the Glider Diner in Scranton. (PA, duh)

I'll be driving up tomorrow morning. I will stop in
Tipton (north of Altoona off I99) to visit Clem's BBQ,
the best BBQ in the world!!!!! :-)

I've been going to Clem's for many years. They used to
be in Blairsville on US22, only about 45 minutes from my
house. Then they moved to the boondocks. So anytime I'm
going east/northeast I go by way of Clem's. Or come back
by way of Clem's. Since they're so far away now I usually
only get there once a year when I go on vacation, usually
to New England or northeastern PA. It's been about 3 years
now since I've been there since I didn't take a vacation in
2008 (saving up for my Montana trip) and then there was the
Montana trip in 2009. Boy am I psyched.

Clem's is really cool - they operate out of a tent, year-round.
They have 3 locations these days one in Tipton, one in State
College, and another one somewhere I never heard of.

Okay, so after I stock up on tons of BBQ, I continue on to
Scranton via I80 and I81.

I'm going to make Cocoa Krispies Treats tonight to take along
to nosh on. I haven't had Krispies Treats in a couple of years.
I've been jonesing for them. I had a coupon for the Cocoa Krispies
and got 2 boxes at Dollar General and it only cost me $3!

When I get to Scranton I will be meeting up with some of the
mailing list members who are coming on Sat. to stay the night.
The actual get-together is on Sunday at noon. Sat. we will meet
at Terry's Diner in Moosic (just south of Scranton).

I plan to order hot roast pork sandwiches both times. I'm on
a quest to find a good hot roast pork sandwich since the Vale-Rio
Diner in Phoenixville closed. Theirs was awesome - huge, thick
slices of juicy roast pork and real pork gravy. (I've been places
that just use generic, crappy beef gravy even for the pork sandwiches.
That's just not right. And, of course, the pork itself is thin and
dry and not very good.) I have great hopes for the Glider Diner
especially based on their menu description. They make their own
porchetta!!!

So while I'm up there I plan to visit a local park with a
gorge and waterfalls and a special treehouse built to give a
view of the gorge. I hope there are still a few leaves on the
trees when I get there.

I also want to go to Steamtown National Historic Site and take
the steam locomotive cab ride and the Scranton Limited train ride.
I also want to go to the Electric City Trolley Museum right next
door and take a trolley excursion. Unfortunately I don't think
I can do both, but I'll try.

After lunch on Sun. (noon-2pm) I'll be heading back to Pittsburgh.
I'm taking vacation days on Mon and Tue to rest up and pig out on
Clem's BBQ.

See you all next Wed!

Kate

Friends of ours are BIG train buffs. Their in-home rail system
would rival that of Buhl Planetarium. We did a couple train rides
in/out of Scranton, and when it was announced that it was time to
visit the trolley museum I decided I had ENOUGH of the damned
trains both there, York, Philadelphia, Allentown, all during the
past week that I finally spoke up and cried foul, "No fair -
trolleys AREN'T trains. **** the trolleys."

I was 12 years old. None of the 4 parents in attendance sided with
me on that one. But I didn't get to go see the trolley museum -
like that would be my "punishment" for being a brat. Thank god.

ObFood: I'm heading down to make hot pork roast sandwiches. I need
to use up the rest of that picnic (shoulder) from last weekend and
you gave me the idea. I'll have to use beef and chicken bases for
my gravy. I usually have no use for pork stock or base unless I'm
making hot and sour soup.

I know a train freak that is way overboard. All their dinnerware
comes from old dining cars. When he bought his first house it had to
have a train line in the back yard. He quit an excellent job to work
as a conductor. He has no people so that didn't last long but he was
able to get the old job back. He's very strange.

Not necessarily, she likes pork sandwiches (my favorite) and wants to
sample them at both places.

I have been to the Glider diner many times and they do have a good
sandwich (both the porketta and roast beef)

Different strokes. I don't even like eating leftovers at home so
there's no way in hell I'm gonna order the same thing two days in a
row when eating out no matter how good it is. The picture you posted
does look good.

Does he walk around the workplace without picking up his feet and
going choo-choo-choo while making the proper arm motions?

It is a really popular non-industrial neighborhood place that serves
good quality "American" food.

I think there are different rules for field trips.

Like a few months ago I met some friends in NYC for an event and we went
to 3 different dumpling shops that day.

Watch out for the bananas ;-).
Couldn't resist when I saw Scranton. One of my all timer favourite
singer-songwriter-storytellers is Harry Chapin (RIP).

Our kids used to sing that song all the time when we were in the car. Many
years ago, I got to meet Harry and his wife after a concert at the Valley
Forge Music Fair. Nice people. Sad that he is gone.

Well, I usually do.

I did bring my winter coat just in case but the weather
was very mild - low 60's. I wore only my Roadkill Cafe
t-shirt and a thin flannel shirt as a jacket. I was quite
comfy.

> 3. Blow me a kiss when you pass by Media, PA.

Oops, too late. Didn't get this until this morning.
Where is Media anyway. I though you were near Philly.
If so I didn't get very close. I took I80 from the
Bellefont/State College area and then north on I81.
Next time I'll remember.

> Have a great time!

I did. I met many lovely, fun, interesting people
and had some good food, too. I went to the Trolley
museum and took a Trolley Excursion. That was fun.

I wanted to ride the train and the trolley but could only do one
due to the time schedules. I opted for the trolley but will do
the train another time.

Both my hot roast pork sandwiches were very good, but neither restaurant
had pork gravy. At the first one I just had it the way it came, with
beef gravy, but the next day I asked for the turkey gravy as I thought
it fit with the pork flavor better. Maybe I could start carrying a jar
of pork gravy along with me on my diner visits. ;-)

Why? I'm on a quest for a great roast pork sandwich.
I love pork so what's the big deal?

I have to say that the pork itself was much better at Terry's
although the Glider's was very good. The pork at Terry's was
like pulled pork and very succulent and juicy. Wonderful texture
and flavor. It was somewhat well, not ruined exactly but it lost
something due to the beef gravy. But I would still rate it an
excellent sandwich and rate the Gliders as very good.
