I attach very little weight to the opinions of "wine experts"; they don't
seem to be very good at predicting what I will like. Sure, I like *some* of
the wines which are highly rated, and I don't like *some* of the wines which
get bad-mouthed, but it's far from a full -- or even majority --
correlation. The difference is that if I spend lots of money on a
highly-rated wine and I don't like it, then I've wasted more money.

You can do a stock check over the Internet. When I buy liquor from BevMo
that's how I usually do it: Their web site allows you to select a store near
you, then you can order beverages which are in stock at that store. Your
order is usually ready for pickup within an hour. It's *extremely*
convenient -- which I think is the whole point; they're hoping the
convenience will lead to greater sales.

You're right and it's pretty easy to find a winery whose barrel aging
practices coincide with my taste, but all in all I can't fault steel
either.

Lin has family all over the place, you lucky dog! I wonder if Fontana
Farms has a retail outlet on site? Their product is wonderful, but
shipping is a killer. A package of 6 brought the total down to retail
level by the each. I forgot to ask them if they have a retailer in
the inner Bay Area (SF, Oakland, Berkeley). I should call again.

i'm a little puzzled, too, as enclosing the u.r.l. in angle brackets
( <u.r.l.> ) usually does the trick, even if the link shows up broken when
it gets to the list. maybe the line break is occurring in her composition
window, before it is sent?

It's a mac issue. I was just curious how many other news readers it
effected. Seems like quite a few as this came up in another group
too.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the Mac or any other platform -
almost by definition, since Usenet is a plain-text medium. It has to do
with newsreaders inserting hard returns at a given line length when
receiving or sending out messages. Xnews, a Windows newsreader, does
it, for example. MacSOUP, a Mac newsreader I usually use, does it too,
and I have to remember to fix the link manually. On the other hand,
proper newsreaders ought to compensate for the added white space in such
cases and open the URL in question regardless. MacSOUP does; many other
newsreaders do not, as witnessed above.

They *should* work, but this is not so very usual, as witnessed by this
thread, for example. This is entirely dependent on whether it is
implemented in a given newsreader.

It seems MT-newswatcher does it also which Is why I assumed it was a
mac thing. I've never noticed it with Xnews posts but I have no
problem taking your word for it. You did answer my question when you
said you had to fix the link manually. I don't know why you'd
mention proper news readers compensating though. I would think a
proper newsreader wouldn't do it to begin with.

The paragraphs are supporting you, saying that the URLs in angle
brackets should work regardless of any white space (like line breaks) in
them. That is the official standard (that is, as official as any
Internet standard). In practice, it depends on individual newsreaders
whose authors often do not care about standards. That is why I try to
remember to fix line breaks in the URLs I post, even though my
newsreader is perfectly compliant with the standard and the breaks
should not be a problem with any other such newsreader. In other words,
people who complain about line breaks in links properly delimited with
angle brackets are really complaining about their own broken
newsreaders.
