To Killfile Andy or not, that is the question of the day
Just a thought, Andy is getting more and more rude and has started attacking people again. What do you think of Killfiling him, I mean everyone here? His attitude has gotten to the point he's snapping at everyone, I doubt he will ever change. He's like Jeckel and Hyde, even Brian has changed his posting habits. |

Once a person has spoken in a manner that proves they are an ignorant prick or slut, I just don't respond to them any more. I guess I have a few brain cells left, because I can read the subject and the from lines, and do most of the deciding myself. I do killfile people just to make it easier. I don't use kill filters, generally. Even if someone is annoying to me, I still want to read their messages just to see what they're saying and respond if I feel the need. But I'm not into ad hominem attacks, so at least when I post something, it usually has a degree of substance, even if the other person doesn't agree with it. There was a discussion about that recently in news.software.readers. Someone so abusive that somoen even wanted to kill responses. A couple of scripts were posted but they were for specific newsreaders other than Agent. I am very fast to plonk someone into my filter but so far I have not wanted such a script. For some newsgroups I use Hamster, a local NNTP server. Hamster downloads all message bodies. I then use Agent to transfer the messages to Agent. But what Hamster can do that Agent can't is filter on the message body, or any header in a usenet message. So with Hamster, you could come up with a scheme that would filter messages from certain posters containing a lot of quoted text. And I think with Korrnews added to the chain, you could even configure Korrnews to delete a percentage of quoted text from incoming messages before they're saved into Hamster. I'm not sure about that for sure, but Korrnews is pretty useful for various things. :) Both programs have a bit of a learning curve, and they're far more capable than my understanding to use them to their full potential. I use Korrnews for special quotes sometimes, like to do this: ,---- [ Korrnews Example ] | Blah blah. | Blah blah blah. | Blah blah blah blah. `---- ....I typed the following into Agent, without the quotation markers: > qqq: > Korrnews Example > - > Blah blah. > Blah blah blah. > Blah blah blah blah. > # ....and then you see the results of how Korrnews changed the message automatically before it was posted. I don't know if Korrnews will do that without Hamster being used as a stopping point for messages. :) > I still keep my google group account active because I search the > archives. Google Groups archives seem to be ruined. I have posted over 10,000 messages on usenet just under this ID alone, and the last time I checked, it only showed 421. I think of it in the same vein as killing an > entire thread except you find a post that quotes a person you don't want > to see and kill the subthread... you're not killing the entire thread. ,---- [ Agent's Help File - Ignore Subthread ] | Ignore Subthread One of the key features of Agent is it's ability to | thread messages, that is, to show responses to messages indented beneath | the original message. Some messages threads can have a great many | messages, with offshoot discussions in which you are not interested | cropping up in "subthreads". In this case you want to find the top | message of such a discussion and ignore it and all the responses to it, | while not ignoring other threads in the message. In Agent you do this | by using the Ignore command on the top message in those subthreads you | don't want to read. Agent will mark this message and all messages in | the thread below this message read, so you can ignore them. `---- As far as I know, there's no way for Agent to parse message bodies and kill all messages that have quoted text from certain posters, but there are people who are more skilled with Agent than I am, despite my ten years of use with it. I usually create pretty simple filters for watching for my own posts so I can easily spot my own messages and responses to them. I normally don't kill messages with filters. Anyway, Agent 6 can hide quoted text, so to me, if one was offended simply by the amount of quoted text someone else was posting, simply hiding it would take care of the problem. And its users were of a kind that you wouldn't normally expect to see them overquoting messages. I think that's why Agent didn't include feature to hide quoted text. They didn't want to encourage their users to overquote. But nowadays, overquoting seems to be the norm, so Forte decided to include it after all. Dialog had always been more advanced than Dialog, at least as far back as Agent 1.5. And best of all, Dialog was free. Dialog hasn't been modified that whole time, and I'd still use it over Agent no doubt about it. With it's own scripting language, there's pretty much nothing it can't do.
