I'm dodging Frances, just after spending a weekend with Charlie. I do own a new
generator with less than 12 hours on it.

The loin medium at most sounds great to me, with the slaw corn on the
cob, etc I don't see how you can go wrong.

Burgers are always a hit with kids and maybe even some hot dogs.
Children aren't scary, give 'em some games, food, and stuff to "build"
their own dessert and they'll be in heaven.

Or, maybe you should just kick back, relax and enjoy the weekend for
yourself for a change?

As I tell Nanc', time I enjoy wasting is *not* wasted time. Just a
thought...

Take the pork loin, butterfly it, and stuff with baby spinach leaves,
provolone...SHOOT, I can't remember what went into it. Click here (with
pictures):

It's good, and I seem to change the stuffing each time.

Now I know exactly what will happen with the two small tenderloins I
bought on impulse. Thank you so much for sharing your instruction and
photos. I will adapt this to a mere oven roasting, as I do not have
another resource, but I know it will be far better than I'd have done
"without you."

We're having our priest, his wife and his kids over Sunday night.
We're having an all night game extravaganza playing Boggle, Empire
Builders, Scrabble, Scattergories, Cranium and whatever else we come up
with. Monday, we will be recovering.

We're also going to a family wedding on Saturday.

Regards,
Ranee

This sounds like the start of a joke.

"Ok, stop me if you've heard this one: a priest, his wife and his kids go
over to Ranee's house for dinner on a Sunday night..."

Oh and for you others: Anglican/Episcopalian priests marry.

LOL!

As do Orthodox priests and our priests who are neither Anglican,
Episcopalian, Orthodox nor Roman Catholic. We belong to the Charismatic
Episcopal Church which is episcopal in its governance but has no tie to
the Episcopal church other than being Christian. I don't know if Coptic
Priests marry.

We're supposed to have our group of 5 friends here, unless plans change.
We're planning half homemade and half take-out -- there's a new "old
fashioned BBQ" joint that we've been wanting to try, so we're planning
to buy the ribs and make potato salad, baked beans, and some kind of
dessert (not decided yet), maybe some rolls.

Ironically, I may end up running in to work for a bit. We're rolling out a
big new database system in one of our departments and it's going into
production this week (including a web component I didn't realize I'd have
to install yesterday and that isn't fully functional, and the developer for
this is quitting the firm on Friday). So we're scrambing to get the web
component functional before he's gone Friday, and I'm going on vacation to
Cape Cod the day after Labor Day. So I may need to trot in for a couple of
hours just to make sure it's all good before I leave for the week.

Boy, what a schedule. Is that what they really mean about Labor Day
weekend? I hope you get through all that OK and enjoy your vacation (and
that the house is coming along OK).

House is doing great, though our kitchen and bath guy is on my hit list. I
had my information to him over a MONTH ago, and he kept putting us off and
jerking us around, and because of his delays, we may end up being delayed
getting into the house by at least three weeks.

I told him to order our bath three weeks ago, because our builder was going
to need it FAST when it was time, and he didn't. So there was yet another
week's delay while he fiddled to get it in.

I'm at a point now where I'm going to see if I can get anything faster from
some other company, I hate rewarding such crappy service. But we may be in
a position where we have to go with them just because we've already lost so
much time.

But the good news is, I'm getting my Dacor cooktop, my Bosch double wall
oven, and my maple cabinets with corian countertops. That has me totally
excited.

Heh. Update on the kitchen front: The guy who told my builder it was going
to take another 9 weeks didn't know that the guy who was working with us
has already arranged things at the factory so that it would be there by the
beginning of October. So we're fine. AND we're getting custom maple
cabinets, which will rock and add value to the house.

Sometime next year I'll have nother Vermont cook-in, if anyone's
interested. Won't have the pool or the indoor gas grill (unless you call my
cooktop with a cast iron grill on it a gas grill ;D) nor the four bedrooms
of extra space, but I do have five acres of woods and a huge porch.

So think about it!

Picnic at the Hollywood Bowl at Movie night.

Artists:

Hollywood Bowl Orchestra
John Mauceri, conductor
Program:

The triumph of "Rocky"...the coolness of James Bond...the hilarity of "The
Pink Panther"... the splendor of "Dances with Wolves." It's the Bowl's
annual Movie Night with John Mauceri and the Bowl Orchestra - great movie
scores with scenes projected on the Bowl's big screen. Produced in
cooperation with MGM/UA.

Thinking about a "Cold Steak" Salad - Crusty rolls - and a nice bottle or 2
of zinfandel.

For pork loin, I use a recipe from Julia Child's MAFC:

dry rub per lb of pork
1 tsp salt
1/8 pepper
1/4 thyme (or sage)
1/8 bay leaf
pinch allspice
1/2 clove garlic

rub the loin and put it in the fridge the day before. brown the roast
in a couple of tblspns of fat of choice. Remove the loin, pour off
excess fat, and put in 2 tbl butter, sliced yellow onion, sliced
carrot, 2 cloves unpeeled garlic, saute for about 5 minutes. Put loin
back in, cover, stick in oven at 325 for about 2 hours (180 to 185 meat
temp)

After it's done, take out the meat, pour in 1/2 cup dry vermouth (dry
white wine, water, or stock is ok too), simmer a couple of minutes,
skim fat, take out veggies (can mash a few into the juice), boil down
to about 1 cup.

This is delicious. I've made it a bunch of times. The pork is very
juicy and tender and just falls apart.

Unfortunately from a gastronomic point of view, but not otherwise, we
will be passaging in our sailboat across the Gulf of Maine, and won't
be doing any fancy stuff. We will stock up from the Friday Greenmarket
before casting off, but won't do much cooking until we get there,
probably on Sunday night or Monday AM.

We will pop a bottle of Gruet to toast Hell Gate as we pass through
the East River on Friday.

I'll wave as you pass if you're starting out from downtown. I'm right off
the highway/river in the east 70's and when I step out my front door and
turn my head to the left I usually see a boat appear and sail/float out of
view as it passes by my dead end block!

The red Hell Gate Bridge is one of my favorite NYC bridges!

Safe trip!

Thanks, Claudia

We always toast Gus Liebenthal's Hell Gate RR bridge as well. It is a
handsome bridge indeed. We pointedly ignore theTriboro. :-)

Safe trip!

Probably ribs, corn and squash on the grill. Although, judging from the
size of Hurricane Frances, I may well be hiding inside from rain on Labor
Day.

I know this whole thread is getting long, but is *this* weekend labor day
weekend? I'm out of the loop, I guess. One day just blends into another
for me. Holidays are no biggie. Wish they were.

Good luck Jill. Hunker down! Hopefully it won't be too bad.

As for my menu, it's probably changed 'cause my WSM is being delivered
today. What it's changed to though I haven't a clue yet. Brisket,
pulled pork, ribs, turkey? Hm, dunno... decisions, decisions, decisions

Thanks, Steve, but I'll just get rain (if anything). My parents, on the
other hand, live on an island off the coast of SC and it could get nasty for
them.
