Those small vials from the Asian groceries contain synthetic camphor (camphor
has been synthesized since trhe early 1930s), a crystaline powder
(non-poisonous) that evaporates, similar to mothballs (naphthalene or
paradichlorobenzene - poisonous). Camphorwood (camphor laurel, Cinnamomum
camphora), as requested by the OP, contains natural camphor oil, which
maintains it's aroma in the wood for thousands of years. In parts of Asia
camphorwood is still used for coffins.
