First I should say - I have been a lurker here for years (I was around and
ordered the first (?) cookbook you all published) I have been shocked by my husband - it appears that the Navy is possibly going to be transferring us to Philly in SEPTEMBER for a year. He would be working at NAVICP - it is on Robbins ST. (the zip is 19111) The reason I post this is - I am looking for anyone willing to share information on neighborhoods that would be good to live in (read safe, not to far away and won't cost my first born) I am also interesting in information on pre-k programs. Here in MD, we do not qualify financially to get into the public pre-k so we have our 4 year old enrolled in a private (at a church) pre-k. It is not a daycare but a 3 half-day a week educational environment. All for the cost of $135 a month. I would like to find something similar. I do apologize for babbling on but if my husband gets these orders (we find out next week :/ ) I have a month and a half to find somewhere to live and a school :P *sigh* Sometimes we get to comfortable in our current life and the NAVY likes to remind us that it is there Roberta (in MD for now) |

I just want to wish you the best in your "adventure", and welcome to RFC! -- Wayne in Phoenix If there's a nit to pick, some nitwit will pick it. |

I live in a suburban Philadelphia community, but I work full time in Philadelphia. My parents also still live in Philly in a neighborhood called Castor Gardens which is maybe about a mile from that Navy facility. The neighborhood around the area where the NAVICP is a lower-middle class, working type neighborhood. Its not the best neighborhood in the world, but its okay. My parents do their grocery shopping at a supermarket about a 1/4 mile away from the NAVICP. Not having kids, I cannot comment on pre-K programs in Philly. If you post your questions on the phl.general newsgroup, I am sure you can find people there who can answer your questions and I am glad to help too. Be aware though that the public school system in Philadelphia sucks. Philly also has a high wage tax, outrageously high auto/home insurance rates. Don't get me wrong. There is a lot of favorable things to say about Philadelphia, but for a family, you might want to look at living in a suburban area. I live in Pennsauken, NJ which is probably about a half hour commute to/from the NAVICP. The benefit of renting in Pennsauken is that you do not have to pay PA income tax, due to an agreement between NJ and PA. You also get to deduct the Philly wage tax from your NJ income tax so you probably will end up owing nothing to NJ on tax filing day. The down side is you get to pay a $3 bridge toll each day. I assume that since this assignment would be for only one year that you would rent a home or apartment rather than buying a place to live. If you were buying a home, my advise to live in Pennsauken would be different, but you could also live within walking distance of the NAVICP and do fine if you're on a limited housing budget. Oh, and one of the big benefits to living in the Philadelphia area is its wonderful restaurants and cultural life. The traffic congestion during rush hour in Philly is also miniscule compared to the Washington DC area. |
