Default Latest baster busted

The bulbs on these basters are just crap.

They last only a couple of years.

This was a nice stainless baster with an injection needle. And I used
it for degreasing, injecting, and for basting.

But the bulb, as with all of it's predecessors, got dry and cracked.

Just before Thanksgiving, of course.

I can replace it, I suppose, for under $10usd, but... what about those
silicon-bulb basters? Do they last longer?

Or maybe there's some better baster.

I think that basting is a complete waste of time. The periodic opening of
the oven reduces the temperature and prolongs the roasting time. The
prolonged roasting dries out the meat. Just say no to basting.

Hmm... never heard it before, I like that.

But I disagree.

Of course, it all depends on what you're cooking... like with a duck,
the bastings will be mostly fat... with a cabbage, mostly watery.

Basting redistributes the liquids a bit, concentrating them on the
outside of the item(s). Which can create more flavor (reduction),
crispness (especially with fats at higher temperatures).

And my ovens usually have been pretty good at promptly returning to the
proper temperature, since I'm wise to that potential problem, and take
care to avoid it.

That's my take on this aspect of the art. And glad to hear yours.

Hmmn. I've had mine forever it seems, without this problem.

Question, do you hand wash it after use or run it through the
dishwasher? I notice the plastic in the bulb is the kind that doesn't
take well to the high heat temps in the dishwasher.

Perhaps an inner tube is called for, a heavy duty condom.

That might be the thing. That's what I do. Put it in the dishwasher.

Think I'll take Wayne's advice and buy a cheap baster or two at a
"dollar store" and see how they last without putting them into the
machine.

Thanks.
