This is related to a US weakness (IMHO) in the American
system of justice. Our juries find only "guilty" or "Not

is much more civilized and just.

To use your approach, a single piece of evidence, lacking
corroboration, is automatically False. It follows, all first pieces

No, this document may be a forgery (remember the G.W.
Bush related letter that destroyed Dan Rather?), or it may
be entirely genuine.
