Default Hearts of Palm

I like these little guys, usually slice them up in salads or just eat
them out of the jar. Does any one have other ways to use them??

Google RFC for "hearts of palm pie." You'll find a small thread I
started and one tinypic link with a picture still shows up even though
it's from 11.30.06. merryb was the only one interested at the time
but it's a wonderful way to use hearts-o-palm. The book that has the
recipe I used is 110 miles away so I just called Louise and asked her
to bring it back to civilization. I'll post it to your attention when
she gets back in a day or three. (maybe next week)

While you're sitting there waiting "on pins and needles" you can
google "hearts of palm pie" and look through the 181,000 hits. You'll
find lots of interesting recipes and one might strike your fancy. It
seems the concept is popular in Brazil. The book I got it from is a
Mexican and Caribbean book.

For lunch a slice is a stand-alone meal. For dinner, a slice with a
meat taco, a portion of beans, and avocado slices is a wonderful meal.

I'll be back when I can get my recipe. I don't have the original
pictures anymore as it was 2 1/2 years ago.

They are delicious sauteed or stir-fried along with other vegetables.
However I've given up eating hearts of palm. They have to kill an entire
palm tree to produce them which doesn't seem very eco-friendly.

Hmmm. I had to look this up. Seems one should know more about
the exact identity of what they are eating:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_palm

Excuse me for just stopping at wikipedia, but I am kind-of in a
hurry this morning.

Once upon a time, they did have to kill the palm tree to get the
heart... but nowadays they farm them and they use 'clumping' palms
that will keep on growing for years even when they cut the outside
stems off. So it's not a lethal luxury any more... just expensive
because there's no such thing as a
'hearts-of-palm-harvesting-machine'. I saw them being canned on 'how
it's made' and it was fascinating. I've never actually tasted them...
but one of these days I will.

6 days ago Jean B posted one of many sources contradicting what you
said. Got anything to say about that?

Didn't think so.

Try them Karen. Nothing to eat daily but a wonderful treat.
