Sometimes the NY Times is usefull, other times they're useless.

This is one of those times when they're useless. There aren't any
top 12 utnesils except in the eyes of the writer.

Well, what kitchen equipment do you use the most often? I know there's
nothing that you HAVE to have... I don't have half the stuff that the
writer had in their top 12 (I've never used a meat thermometer in my
life!) but if you took away my big glass mixing bowl and my measuring
cup set I'd be upset.

well, you could say that about any top ten list (except maybe by sales).
it's an opening for discussion, and possibly the opportunity to call other
people names.

It's a standard trick of a hack writer for spinning
a story out of nothing. I'd predict the same writer
has other titles like:

Top 10 Weight-Loss Secrets
Best 20 Values In California Wines
8 Ways To Satisfy Your Husband In Bed

All equally vacuous.
