I would consider it a step in the right direction if our school
lunches were served on plates and kids used real trays like in that
picture.

That looks like a good initiative. We don't have the cafeteria type lunches
in schools here that you have in the US (not in public schools anyway), so
no programs like that.

This program though, is something rfc'ers might be interested in reading

Stephanie Alexander is quite a well known chef/cookbook writer here. She
started this program with one school in Victoria. The program is now
national, but numbers of schools that can participate are limited.

It's aimed at children in years 3 - 6 (around 8 to 10 years of age). They
develop and work in an organic kitchen garden on the school grounds, and
also use the produce they grow in lessons in the kitchen.
