Default If you're out of leeks?

What would you substitute?

I chopped up some yellow onions. OK?

I refuse to run to the store for an item I should've remembered but
didn't. No, it wasn't on my list - old age creeping up.

Might be... depends on the dish. If leeks are supposed to be the main
ingredient, a substitution could still yield a very good result, but it
would be a different dish. Leeks are in the onion family, so onions,
chives, perhaps even garlic would naturally come to mind, but so would
also celery stalks, for example.

Leeks have a different mild taste and, while substituting onions could
be acceptable, the results would be noticeably better, IMHO, with leeks
if they are called for. I'll just mention two simple dishes: vichysoisse
soup and braised leeks.

Depends on the dish but any onion would probably work. But if I couldn't
find leeks or didn't like the price I'd probably substitute a bunch of green
onions... shallot might work too, or any of the sweets (vidallia?). For
potato leek soup I almost always use green onions... never yet has anyone
noticed a difference.

Oooooooo, I should try that! We love green onions, and they're far
more affordable than leeks ... if you can find leeks in the first
place.

You know you are staying in a redneck hotel . . .

when you call down to the desk to say "I gotta leak in my sink",

and the clerk says, "Well, go ahead."

Sorry.
