Default m&m cupcakes

For some reason I have been itching to try an experiment: to make
cupcakes but scatter m&m candies over the top of the batter before
baking. The idea would be that the m&ms would rest on top, self-
decorate the cupcakes, and obviate frosting. Before I try this, has
anyone already done it? Would the ms stay on top, or do they sink to
the bottom like stones? Would something else be better to use?
