Default Serving Gravy?

Do you prefer to serve gravy by pouring it out of a gravy boat or
serving it out of a gravy dish with a ladle?

I like a gravy dish with ladle. I don't like the idea of someone wiping the
end of a gravy boat to catch "drips," which often happens if there is no
ladle.

Oh, I should have realized that. I did think it was an unusual question. I
need to remember to look at the addy.

It really depends on the china service, table setting, and number of people.
The grave dish with ladle holds much more than the gravy boat.

IMHO people on T day tend to use more gravy than a usual dinner.

With all fourteen descendants on hand we usually just put a bucket of
gravy on the table with a scoop. <VBG>

I'm glad a few of you liked the question! Stalker boy Greg Morrow posted in

Been there - The gravy dish is for the second or third ladle after the
stuffing has absorbed the first serving.

If we had a more upstanding moral climate in this country we wouldn't need
such silly "tests", blake...

BTW, this year I've decided to gift you with William Bennett's _The Book Of

We've always thought of turkey and chicken gravy
as something of a beverage at our house.

We usually have a gravy boat with ladle at either
end of the table.

The DH claims that turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls,
etc. are merely conveyances for gravy. The lad does like his gravy.
Years and years ago you used to be able to buy Mystery Beef and gravy
in a boiling bag. He used to heat one or two up and pour it over
Wonder bread. I always tried not to look (as I currently still do when
he makes his sofa cushion omelets, etc.).

I'm surprised you didn't mention he uses cold gravy as a spread on bread for
sandwiches - or does he?

When I was a kid I used to love the hot roast beef sandwiches they served
at the lunch counters in dime stores and drug stores. It probably wasn’t
much different than that beef and gravy in a bag, but it tasted good back
then.

If you're talking about the open faced hot roast beef sandwich served
on white bread (probably lightly toasted) with a scoop of mashed
potatoes on top and smothered in what was probably canned beef
gravy.... OMG. It was sublime!

I used to make that at home with real everything and it tasted just as
good to me.

I never heard the insulting usage but I was brought up to call the
elongated jug "a sauce boat". My family had improved a little from
Voltaire's observation that "the English have 63 religions and one
sauce."

My father used to eat that for breakfast, when there was just a little
pot roast and gravy left, but not enough for a family meal.

That reminds me of an ex of mine who would use a slice of white bread
to sop up the pan drippings from fried pork chops. He would then plate
it and pour on the pancake syrup.
