Default Vanilla beans-questions

Hello all,
I have a question regarding using vanilla beans. I want to make some
sort of fruit cobbler soon, and I want to make homemade vanilla ice-
cream to go with it. I have never attempted vanilla ice cream, but
have made many other flavors with excellent results.
My questions a Is the flavor of the vanilla better if using
vanilla beans rather than vanilla
extract?
Is the difference really noticeable?
Where in the supermarket would I find
vanilla beans?

As always, any ideas, hints, or suggestions would be appreciated.

The ice base recipes that came with my Cuisinart ice cream maker call
for Vanilla extract, with other flavours added. They are much better
with real vanilla extract than with artificial. Then there is the
deluxe Vanilla that also uses vanilla pod. You toss in a bean, or half a
bean if they are big, while the milk/cream is heated, then split it and
scrap the seats into the mix. It really does add a lot of good flavour
to the ice cream.

Whether you want to go to the expense of adding a vanilla bean for
something that is goign to be served on a cobbler is another matter.

Yep..... either 'Darren' is a troll (doesn't look like it to me) or he
missed the previous conversation.

Many good recipes I've seen scrape the paste from the inside of the bean.

I suppose sigs are a bit like bumper stickers, usually sacrosanct, but I
don't think the Dalai Lama was being particularly profound or original
even if one can't disagree.

To me, it's one of those things that sound better attributed to someone
famous. It reminds me a little of the bumper sticker that my local
food-nut coop sells attributing to Albert Einstein "You can't
simultaneously prepare for peace and war". I'm not sure that Einstein
ever said it and the opposite has been maintained for 2500 years, Sun
Tzu being the first to express what Clausewitz said "If you want peace,
prepare for war."

I respect the Dalai Lama, so I've been rotating thru quotes from him
lately.

I'll change it here shortly. ;-)

Thanks for the kick.

For true insight into his life and personality, watch the movie "Seven
Years in Tibet".

It's based on actual history.

The book is always better than the movie...

Many thanks to everyone for your comments.I don't recall seeing a
previous discussion on vanilla beans recently so I apologize if my
questions were redundant.
I will be at Costco and Trader Joe's this weekend, so I will look for
some vanilla beans there.
Thanks again!
