Something interesting I thought I'd share...
This weekend I took a friend out for a birthday dinner. Went to a little Pan - Asian place down the block, a place I'd never patronised but it was the choice of the Birthday Gal... A pleasant meal in a nice space, dinner with a coupla drinks ran about $60.00... The service was very pleasant and enthusiastic, provided by a cute young guy. When informed that this was a birthday "event" he treated us to dessert... I noticed that he was wearing a big "Gays for Obama" button (with the requisite ghastly rainbow logo...if gays have such supposedly good taste why do they *still* insist on donning that dreary 70's _Free To Be You And Me_ rainbow logo relic...???}. I said to him, "Did you vote yet?". "Oh yeah, I can't wait 'til he's president, we gotta get this country going again"... So I gave him a big smile and said, "Well, since you are a big fan of Obama and his policies I know you won't mind if I don't tip you. The $20.00 I'd normally leave you I'm going to 'donate' to the first homeless person I see. I know that Obama is big on the 're-distributing the wealth' thing..."... He gave me what can be described as a "look". I got up to leave and gave him a huge smile, saying, "I wish you luck on election day"...once we left I could see him through the window, commiserating with the other waitstaff and pointing at me...he was not "smiling", shall we say. A few minutes later I espied a homeless guy selling copies of the local Chicago homeless "newspaper" _Streetwise_...he too was wearing a big Obama button. I gave him a twenty, saying, "Keep it, man, Obama told me to give this to you", to which he replied, "Hey, thanks, man! Thanks, thanks a LOT...!!!"...and we both gave each other a big "thumbs up". I felt real, *real* good that I had done my duty as a good citizen...I knew that the "Karma God" was surely beaming down very kindly at me this evening.. Anyways, I think this was a pretty good demonstration of "Obamanomics" in action...I'm a big believer in "putting one's money where one's mouth is" and all that jazz... Oh, and be sure to VOTE on Election Day, or if you have early voting in your state you can vote right now... :-) -- Best Greg " I find Greg Morrow lowbrow, witless, and obnoxious. I did vote this past Wednesday. I see no reason not to take advantage of early voting for the two weeks it runs and avoid the crowds at the polls on the 4th. There are two early voting locations here in town. If anyone has not made up their mind by now, what's the point? Y'all have thru the 31st for early polling. -- Peace! As they used to say here in Chicawgo, "Vote early and vote often"...those days are pretty much over here. A century or so ago it was standard practise here to bribe potential voters with free drinks or such...and if you didn't vote for the "right" candidate you could lose your job or even your home. -- Best Greg |

Heck, the "lunch specials" at the cheap - o Chinese take - out place down the street are now in the $8.00 - $10.00 range! I remember not so long ago they were around five bux...I guess I'm gettin' old, lol.. Also this place is of the new crop of "chi - chi" Pan - Asian places that seem to be cropping up in the nabe here in Chicawgo. Very _Sex & The City_, nice decor, and a pretty 20 - something crowd, everybody all crowded in with tiny tables and chairs - and LOUD! The food is secondary, I won't be going back in any case, lol... I rarely eat out anymore, it's just pretty poor value for money. There's a place I go to for Friday all - u - can - eat fish n' chips for $8.00 and some cheap Chinese dim sum and bbq places where you can fill up pretty well for little money... For that $60.00 I could fix a feast, but it was her birthday, so... -- Best Greg |

I don't go out for dinner as often as I used to because I am retired and living on less. Besides, we don't often do Chinese because of my wife's food allergies, which include soy.... soy sauce. Last month when my son was visiting we went out for a Thai meal and dinner for three was about $75. So $60 for two doesn't sound out of line. |

Lol... Actually, if I were in the waiter's position I would have thought something along the lines of "Hmmm...maybe I shouldn't wear anything that promotes any particular political candidate, maybe nobody cares who I vote for. I'm there to do my job, not to proselytize...". Voting and politics is a very personal thing, and I don't bring up the subject unless someone else does. Being in the heart of the *** community *everyone* assumes that *every* *** person is voting for Obama or whoever the Democratic candidate of the moment is, they assume that all conservatives are evil, that Reagan was The Devil Incarnate, etc. So when someone - and I'm speaking especially here of the *** activists I know - starts going on about "our community" and such I'll always pipe up and say, "Uh, did I elect you to speak for me?". These types always act very shocked when I respond in such a manner my response is, "Well, Y-O-U brought it up, didn't you? Did it ever occur to you that not every single person you encounter might not agree with you...???". As I've gotten older I've gotten very tired of all the politically crap, and there is a LOT of it in the *** community. These people are a pretty smug and self - satisfied bunch, very adept at crying "victim" and pointing an accusing finger at any who dare to disagree with them...many take the moral high road when they personally *themselves* are naught but scumbags. That to me is simply childish and immature and I distance myself from that. IMNSHO the the "*** community" is a pretty fvcked - up group who need to grow up and get their acts together, the only "community" that's more messed - up is the black community... The thing is that when some group - in this case the *** community - posits themselves as so very morally superior to, say, Republicans or conservatives or whatever and when they act exactly as bad or worse as they they are criticising that makes them hypocrites. I *ain't* havin' it... It's similar to when the Repugs were all braying about Clinton's blowjob a decade ago and then it comes out that some of his GOP accusers (particularly IL Rep. Henry Hyde aka "Henry Hyde the Humbug" as we called him here in Illannoy) was just as guilty of even *worse* egregrious behaviours in his past, e.g. blatant affairs, divorces, etc. BTW years ago I was in some podunk place downstate and I ate at a place where you got a printed bible verse thing with your check. I did not tip *that* waitperson either, same as I did with the incident above. Your particular agenda is *not* my business, so don't be all annoying and shoving it my face and then expect me to *pay* you for it on top of everything...it's simply common sense to me. Anyways, I am a very generous tipper and I am always kind to those working in public contact positions, I'm big on the "Please, thank you, sir, ma'am" stuff. I've worked those jobs and a customer being nice to them more often than not might even make their day...they work pretty hard for not much money. -- Best Greg |

I don't think you can get much more personal than stiffing a server at a nice restaurant for wearing a political button supporting a candidate different than the one the diner supported. > He was trying to make some sort of statement which didn't > come off... at all. I guess he made his point. I suspect he won't try eating there again anytime soon. > Michael <- big old fag... Well, that brings up another point. Unless this was a restaurant that catered mostly to gays, perhaps wearing a button proclaiming that the server was *** might turn off a few tips, also. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California USA |

The President doesn't have the power to TAX. Only the congress has the power. Ergo as per Penn & Teller BULL SHIT! Technically you are right but the president sets the budget agenda and has considerable political clout to make it happen especially when newly elected. Just like Bush pushed through his entire tax plan in 2001 with the exception he was forced to accept a 10 year sunset clause. That is called a compromise and compromise is what democracy is all about. But thanks for expressing your childish naiveté regarding civics. You have the basics down but you simply don't seem to know how it all ties together and the interplays that make it all work. Elected, you can be assured Congress will pass all of Obama's tax changes. Especially since it looks like the repugs will have their asses handed to them on a plate come Tuesday. Paul |

I have a copy on my > HD if anyone wants a copy. Me too and you can read it online. I love these civics lessons. Quick, what article of the Constitution empowers Congress to levy taxes and not *specifically* income taxes? Regardless, even if we had a split Congress, Obama if elected would have his tax plan passed - it would be a huge precedent shift to deny a new president his initiatives. It's just not done traditionally but it could be done, yes. See below for the answer to my question. Answer: Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution, which states: "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States" Contrary to what others have posted, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution cleared up the status of income taxes specifically. The poster was quite wrong in using the 16th to make some support attempt at what is not even being disputed in the first place. The 16th declared income taxes to be an indirect tax not subject to "uniform" distribution i.e. apportionment. Income taxes were always legal under Article 1, Section 8. The 16th just settled the issue. It does not permit Congress to levy taxes - taxes being a collective term, income taxes being a specific tax. Article 1 already did that. Paul |

However I still don't think it's good form for an employee who depends on tips for income to wear political buttons and the like... > Om -> Stirring the pot... "Boil, boil, toil and trouble..." ;-P BTW Om, I "hear" that the Chicago Police Department is preparing for "riot duty" on Tuesday night..."stay tuned" as they say...there was a live press conference on the local cable nooze channel today, it was a friggin' MELEE with the reporters shooting questions to the assorted stonewalling city officials. Just so ya know... That homeless guy I gave the twenty to was all up and down the street tonight (loverly nite, it was 65 degress, will be sunny and 70 here in Chicawgo for election day) bothering everybody in all the little businesses. They kicked him out of the Pilipino corner store where I was buying Mae Ploy chili sauce (SQWERTZ ALERT!) and baloney for sammiches...then he came into our corner bar where he was kicked out...the cops were called to the Mexican resto next door, he was put into custody because he went in and pulled down his pants in front of several female patrons...I guess "spreading the wealth" did not work in this particulur case. :-| -- Best Greg |

Obama has his own medics or doctors with him but the city supplies the ambulances and a medic to drive it if something happens.
