Default Got to use my new kitchen toy today

Wasn't it P.T Barnum that said there is a sucker born every minute.
After I made my latest purchase that's how I felt. Story is on my
blah, blah, blog.

I got to thinking that if it wasn't for people like me some people
would go out of business. Well...I got to use my new found goodie
today and I love it.

I used the ULU (OO-Loo) I love the straight up and down chopping
motion and it sure made quick work of dicing up onions, celery and
pickles for my potato salad. It's of good quality and is not flimsy at
all. I'm a happy camper and can't wait to chop, slice, and dice some
more.

Oh - I think that's a mezzaluna. Or maybe half a mezzaluna. It's
usually used with a shallow round wooden bowl. You can chop all day
and not have to chase stuff across a counter. Round bowl, round knife
blade = more efficient.

Dad bought a similar toy sometime back. I may have to try it. Right now
I mostly use a chinese chef's knife.

Hey, my sister gave me one of those last Spring, sent by her Alaskan
daughter. I like it, although, IMHO, it's a PITA to store. Mine has a
wood stand-- a block of wood with a slit in it to hold it, blade into the
slit. One more thing on my already-crappy-cluttered counter. But I
like its cutting action--I usually use it in a rocking motion rather than
up and down chopping.

That's rather handsome. Who made it? Does it differ from a
chopper that has the same shape?

It's an Alaskan ULU, http://www.ulu.com/ it's used more in an up and
down chopping motion. I have a mezzaluna and it's used more in a
rocking motion.

It sure went through the celery, onions and pickles that went into the
potato salad. Here is a web site for them http://www.ulu.com/

I think you are refering to the mezzaluna, it's used more with a
rocking back and forth motion the ULU is a straight up and down
motion. Now I have both, lucky me ;-)

Oooo, I like the deluxe ulus. I'd like the others better if they
just had a design and didn't say "
Alaska" on them.

I have a Ulu. It was fun when it was new, but I hardly ever use it. It
was a "must-buy" when I want to Alaska with an RV caravan in 1997. It
sat around for years before I gave it away. A year later, a friend gave
me one as a gift. It's somewhere in the kitchen. I prefer my huge chef's
knife.

I hope you don't get as bored with yours as I did with mine.

It's an Alaskan native thing (as in Eskimo). Big tourist item in Alaska.

Ooo I'm jealous! I had an ULU when I was in Alaska that a gentleman from my
husband's work brought it to me as a gift when they came over for dinner. I
*loved* that thing. Alas, when our storage was broken into after we moved
back here, it was stolen along with countless other things I loved.
Ah well, maybe again, some day Enjoy yours!

So chuck the stand...make a cardboard blade protector and store it in a
drawer like I do. Or keep the stand and put it in a display case...maybe
you can get a tax break as a Museum.

My dad was stationed in Sitka in the 1950's. He took lots of photos of
totem poles while he was there. No ulus, though.

Here they are side by side. I think the ulu is more versatile.
http://i38.tinypic.com/2n6fbba.jpg

The ulu is beveled on only one side while the mezzaluna is beveled on
both. The website has some tips on how best to use it.

Good picture showing the large size difference. I had no idea and had
never heard or seen an ulu before this.

Glad you liked it, and I like the looks of that. Have you ever used the
Pampered Chef "Mix n' Chop"? I went to one of their "parties" the other
night and I bought a couple of things and got this for free. Ok, their
stuff is overpriced so I won't call it free, but I wouldn't have bought it.
I can't find it on their web site, so it must not be a good seller.

I did buy this, though, and I'm sure you guys are going to tell me I was
ripped off, but it was a friend throwing the cooking party so I had to buy
something. lol

You do not need to justify to anyone here as to how you spend your own
money. If it makes you happy to own it, buy it.

You are right, it is adorable. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

I haven't decorated cakes in a long time, but I miss it. Mostly it's my
stove that doesn't work well, but I'm going to try it again when I get this
pan. I'm going to practice for Valentine's Day and pair up the rose shaped
cupcakes with a heart-shaped cake. )

Our neighbours were on a trip to Alaska a few months and brought one
back for us. I don't know why they always bring us gifts when they
travel. I never get anything for them. Maybe I should open it up and try
it out.

My great grandmother was German, and I have her mezzaluna and the wooden
bowl that came with it. It is so old, I am afraid to use it.
