NO, blue crabs are not EVER picked raw. EVER. They are way too perishable.
What you were seeing was cooked crab made into cakes. Even if you could get
the little slimy bits out of the shell raw, they's likely kill you by the
time you ate them.

Soft blue crabs are killed, cleaned, and quickly frozen, but they are fried
whole, sans guts.

Greg, I *do* wish, despite it giving you great joy, you wouldn't quote her
crap when she's talking to or referring to me. If you didn't, I'd never see
her drivel.

Maybe we could have some kind of contest to see who's caught crabs the
most often.

Q: Why does the ocean roar?

A: You'd roar too if you had crabs on your bottom.

Thankfully, I've missed all of this so far. I can't imagine that
you'd say you'd "pick" a soft shelled crab even if it was a "blue"
crab. Nobody eats crab raw.

Ocean City. Or the Outer Banks. All you need is a piece of string tied to an
chicken wing, preferably one you've left out until it is stinky. Toss if off
the pier,
and in minutes you wind up with a fat blue crab on the end of the string,
clutching
the chicken wing.

But better was when my grandfather caught them in "crab pots" in VA.

Still, I have never steamed them live. I leave that so others. Po little
thangs.

I never mentioned soft shelled crab, not once. (In fact, I never
specifically said it was blue crab, either.) OB Food: There's a soft shell
crab festival in Port Royal today; might drive over and have a mess o' fried
soft shells
