Default I give up!

This group is so overrun with spam nowadays that I can't even find the
real messages amongst the dross, no matter how many different
kill-filters I make to try and get rid of it. I could ignore it while
it was just a small flow, but there's ten times as much 'noise' as
'signal'! Agent doesn't have the ability to filter posts by domain,
just by author or subject, so I give up.

Don't give up! There are many newsreaders out there that will filter out
the junk easily. I just eliminated all future reference to
world-wholesaler with a single command. It's as easy as getting and
becoming familiar with a better newsreader. Or better learning your own
in some cases. Unfortunately, my newsreader won't work on your system.
My news provider (Supernews) does much filtering for me but crap always
leaks through.
Blinky should cruise along shortly with authoritative help on your
system and on all systems for that matter.

Agent can do that too, if you're willing to take an extra step.

There are many downloadable filters available for the major readers such as
OE, Thunderbird and Agent. You don't have to live with the spam, most of it
can be filtered. Just finding one that filters all gmail is a huge relief.
Filtering by domain other than valid ones is pointless because the spammers
use fake domains with every post usually.

40tude Dialog looks and acts much like Forte Agent, just 200%
better. And it's free.

Otherwise, do what others here have done and just remove posts with
'From:' addresses of @gmail.com.

Just some suggestions. I'm not going to beg anyone to stay if
that's what you're looking for.

Are you filtering GG posts? That's a huge, huge help.

Unfortinately that's more work with Agent than with many other clients,
because Agent itself can't do it and you have to spoon-feed Agent with
pre-filtered groups from a local proxy/server that you run on your machine.

http://improve-usenet.org/ and click Agent in the menu.

You spurred me on to add google groups to my score file. I've done a lot
of tweaking to the file in the past, but had never added that.

What would be the most easily configurable solution you could come up
with using Windows and considering a person's willingness to change
client and server and a weakness with the command line? I'm curious
because I have no experience with Windows clients. Just off the top of
that flat doll-eyed head of yours.

Win news clients with GUIs? Xnews, Dialog, perhaps Gravity (although I
have less experience with the latter). Xnews is my primary Win news
client; from my evaluations (and I have seven or eight clients installed,
configured, and usable at the click of an icon) Dialog is pretty close to
Xnews, and my admittedly less time with Gravity left me with a pretty good
feeling that it. I would avoid the ones with weak filtering, because you
have to pre-chew your feed for them; i.e., you have to use a local server
or proxy between your external feed and the client, to do the filtering
tha the client can't. An example is TB; while I recommend it over OE (as
I would a three-legged hound with mange) its *news* filtering is almost
worthless (oddly, its mail filtering is okay). If you make the move, keep
this in the back of your head: news.software.readers It's the de facto
support group for Xnews and it gets plenty of Dialog traffic; there are
experts in both there; it's a very good group. And filtering info for
your choice is probably available, of course, at the UIP.

I guess that's my problem... I never used to notice the spam nearly so
much because my provider filtered some of it out... but the one I use
now is totally unfiltered so it all comes pouring in and if I want to
get rid of it I have to do it one header at a time. Needless to say,
it's driving me to distraction!

The above will kill a lot of it. Not all spam comes from GG, of course,
but the amount that does seem to be increasing every few seconds.
Try some different feeds; perhaps you can find better filtering. They
won't be filtering GG spam, so you'll still have to do that yourself; but
between a well-filtered feed and local GG filtering, you'd be amazed at
how little spam you'll see. I basically don't see any spam in here, for
instance, except for what people reply to and quote.

I just skip over what I don't want to read. Most of the spam is quite
obvious. No biggie.

I used to do that as well. The problem has grown so much in recent months
that Karen is right, you can hardly find the 'real' posts that dwell amongst
all the 'spam' posts.

Deleting ' -- specific to the 'From' identifier -- nips
virtually all the spam in the bud.

And 8 months ago when I told everyone I was killfiling Google Groups
many of you thought I was full of shit and to just do whatever the
hell I needed to - but the general consensus was that I was being
ridiculous.

I told my detractors at that time that they'd see it my way in a few
months. So now it's time for me to gloat :-P

Mix the balsamic with either ground peanuts or peanut butter (either one,
whichever you can afford) and make a rub and massage it into the gloat then
cook it on a grill. A hot flaming grill is best.

And the best thing is that if you can't find any locally, there's tons of

But there's a difference between killfiling posts from Google Groups and
killfiling gmail users. You don't have to have a gmail account to post from
Google. But getting rid of the @gmail.com stuff definitely helps. Every
once in a while I let the domain back in just to see if things have
improved. Then I block it again.

I'm well aware of that, dear. That why I said I killfiled Google
Groups and not Gmail.

Thank you for allowing me to gloat some more. It looks like the
original conversation was back in Sep 2006, so it was 1.5 years ago,
not 8 months ago like I originally stated. But still - "I TOLD YOU
SO!"

I just looked at all the Google posts I've been missing (a single
click of the button in 40tude Dialog) and there has been a
horrendous shitload lately. It's gone from Watches and Handbags to
porn Spam - and still Google won't do anything about it.

I hold Sheldon in higher regards than I do Google.

I started doing same at last. Almost 40% reduction in number of posts now,
but seems the real threads are here. I did it after nting several days were
50
% of the posts seemed @gmail related spam.

I dont need some OP telling me yet again, 'i'ts not gmail, it;s google
groups'. I filter with the tools I have and few people of note were still
using @gmail accounts to post. Most folks who care enough about being
heard, moved off the @gmail addresses when people started blocking the whole
set.

Not according to the rest of your post. You seem to be filtering gmail
users instead. Make up your mind.

I tried it and it got rid of 456 messages at one go. I didn't know you
could do that... I just hope that it actually works and gets rid of
enough junk that I have a prayer of reading the group again.

I just tried what you did and got rid of about a thousand. I've been
watching the other suggestions in this thread also and most of the spam now
doesn't show up with word filters in the "News Rules". Looks a lot cleaner
now.

It makes such a difference. I keep an eye out for legitimate posters from
gmail and exclude them from the rule. I hate the thought of losing Karen
due to something out of my control. Please don't leave.

The problem for me is, that some lovely people here post from google and I
am not willing to miss their posts. I can see the junk and I just ignore
it.

When this came up early last year a few of the "real" posters who use gmail
simply changed their newsreaders to reflect a bogus @address. (I think
Omelet was one of them.) Of course, spammers can do this, too, but they are
so busy spamming they usually don't

I did that too... until it got so that well over 50% of the messages
coming in were spam!

I sympathize, it seems as if i spend more time filtering this group than
i do reading it.

At some point the nose to signal ration must be considered.

I use Agent. All I need to do is filter the subject or author.
Voilą, gone. During the last spam attack, I picked key words to
filter... but this one isn't bothering me as much as the last.

This spate is 100pct the result of YOOSE cross posting and no other
reason whatsoever, NONE! Everytime you reply to a cross posted post
you regenerate the post to many, many, many usenet groups...l; in
essense you're trolling for bombers.

IT'S ALL YOUR OWN FAULT... I know it's your own fault *particularly*
because I've seen your posts cross posted, either on purpose or
inadvertantly, by not deleting the other usenet groups before hitting
Send.... yoose are all doing it, even yoose dumbest of douchebags who
act like self appointed computer mavens, sqwetz in particular who
knows ZERO but is one of ths worst cross posting offenders here.

Don't include ME in that number! I NEVER cross-post - Agent pops up a
warning box if you reply to a cross-posted message and specifically
asks if you really want to reply to ALL the groups or just the one
you're in.
