The only flaming dessert of the '70s that I remember ordering is
crepes suzette and I didn't order it for the effect, like I did with
shish-kebabs.

I tried to make cherries jubilee at home one time, but couldn't get
the brandy ignited very well so I kept pouring until maybe half the
bottle was in it. Frankly, I wasn't much of a drinker back then so it
tasted pretty nasty to me. Years later, I realized I probably *did*
have some decent flames but the lights were too bright to see them.

well.. fake as in I believe they're all "reformed" (delinquent chickens!
lol) or processed in some fashion. They never seem to be the same solid
meat I buy. How else can you explain the texture and the 4928 identical
"breasts" served each day?

Well, the commercially mass produced chickens are rather like that. Bred
and engineered for absolute consistency to allow fully automated
processing.

My first and only visit to a newly opened (a few weeks prior) Applebees
was so bad in every possible way that I blacklisted the entire chain and
have never been to one since.

I've been to Ruby Tuesday a few times and it's been ok, just average
acceptable chain stuff. Comparable to Chili's, Olive Garden, Ground
Round and other basic chain places.

The Cheesecake Factory, Macaroni Grill, Magianno's and similar represent
and upper level of chain restaurant with pretty good food. Still chain
food, with nothing really outstanding and a consistent menu.

You CAN see, right? You DO know you aren't at a five (or four) star
restaurant too, right? Who do you really think is throwing that food on
a plate?

It's a gimmick restaurant.

The best way to do it is to put the brandy into a large spoon or a ladle
and old it over a flame to heat it up, then tip it to one side until it
ignites and then pour it over. the cherries. You do need to have the
lights low because they flames are blue...... and hot..... very hot.

These places are perfect for:

- when you're travelling, you're in an unfamiliar town, and way too
exhausted to go exploring. "Oh good - there's Ruby Tuesday. It's familiar."

- when you've been shopping way too long with children who are on the verge
of meltdown, and the safest bet is something familiar.

It doesn't take much to turn someone off. I was in Macaroni Grill
about 10 years ago and we each had a glass of wine from the table jug.
When the waiter asked how many glasses we had he questioned our
honesty. The jug wasn't full to begin with. That's all it took for
us to never return.

We were at the downtown Chicago Magianno's last week. Nothing special
except for a big bill. It didn't even smell like a restaurant.
Friends took us there for our birthday or I never would have gone.
There's too many better and cheaper places around here.

Well, I would have talked to the manager about that one.

My Applebee's experience was a bit different given that the location was
open only a few weeks and should have been under corporate oversight at
that point. Every possible thing was wrong from the service to the food,
it was bad enough that in a decent restaurant I would have expected the
manager to be over apologizing to all the various customers for the
problems. It wasn't just my party either, I noticed other parties with
issues, and the place was perhaps at 30% capacity.

Yep, adequate for a quick lunch or dinner if there isn't ambition to
find something better.

I think I've been to the Chicago location and it was good. Smith and
Wollenski is a better choice in Chicago I think. The Magianno's in
Buckhead (Atlanta) was pretty good and bustling, but everything around
there is.

Ya know what? I went into Cheesecake Factory and asked for an ostrich burger
with Santa Fe sauce and Southwestern cole slaw, with a side order of chiles
rellenos and an açai iced tea, and I DIDN'T GET WHAT I WANTED EITHER!

So what better place to complain about it than HERE?

Must have been the way you were dressed. I had that meal at the

Sounds pretty normal to me. Just not what you'd expect in a chain

Guess what: When it comes to The Cheesecake Factory, neither Dr Pepper nor
fettuccine alfredo are "normal".
