I just bought a box of Grape nuts. I remember a commeiacl about eating them
hot like oatmeal. I also love them on icecream. What do you think about
using them to top apple crisp?

It's a crunchy, granola-like cereal. It's sold in the United States.
Horrible, horrible stuff. Eating a bowl of road gravel would be tastier and
easier on the teeth.

I stir them into yogurt for breakfast. It's best if you let
the mixture sit a few minutes to get just a little soggy.

Horrible??? It must be a matter of taste. I think they are delicious with some
whole milk and dark brown sugar. Unfortunately, they changed the recipe in the
Canadian product. The American stuff is much better. I have a friend who makes
several trips per year from the Toronto area to Niagara Falls NY to buy it by
the case.

Oh, I love Grape Nuts, I just don't eat cereal any more because I
should stay away from milk. I think people make muffins with it,
and I'd bet they have recipes on their website (they're Post, right?)

I love Grapenuts, hot and cold. And of course, grapenut pudding
which is pretty easy to make.

(I don't htink I bothered scalding the milk)

1 quart milk
1 cup Grape Nuts cereal
1 cup sugar
4 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla

Scald milk. Add cereal to hot milk and cool. Add sugar, eggs, and
desired
flavoring(s). Pour into a Pour into a greased 2-quart casserole dish.
Place custard dish into a pan with water. Sprinkle w/ nutmeg if
desired. Bake in a 350-degree oven until golden brown crust has formed
(approx 1 hour).

My late mother-in-law used to eat them for breakfast.
The kids referred to it as "Grandma's Gerbil Food."

My mother used to make GrapeNut custard, baked in
the oven. It softened them enough to make them edible.

Grape-nuts don't have to be rock-hard, as long as you let them sit in the
milk for some time to soak. About 10 minutes is all it needs. The soaking
helps with the flavour, too, because the milk absorbs some of it into
itself, so the nuggets actually taste like whole grains.

To expand on the description, what grape-nuts are is nuggets of whole wheat
and barley ground like semolina and then made into something very similar
to a coarse couscous. As you might expect, the behaviour is remarkably
similar to couscous so you can use them for couscous-like dishes. They
taste slightly sweeter than typical couscous. Steamed grape-nuts with
raisins and pine nuts is a great, quick way to start your day - sort of a
twist on pilaf.

Combined with medium-ground nuts (I prefer hazelnuts) and some butter, they
make an interesting and different pie crust a bit like a crumb crust. I
suppose there's no reason you couldn't omit the ground nuts, either, if you
preferred.

This may scare you, Nancy, but the SBF, and many other Finns, pour
blueberry soup over their cereals!!(For some reasons, Finns are quite
likely to be lactose intolerant). Not sweetened kind but tasty. As far
as I know, you can buy it at IKEA. It is a thickened juice, made from
boiling them down with some water.

IIRC, when we were in Sweden and Denmark all the breakfast
buffets had a few pitchers of various fruit flavored thin
yogurts to pour on cereal.

There's a grapenut custard pudding you see all over New England. Eaten
it, not made it, but they get soaked in the custardy milk to soften up
while baking. It's actually not bad, if a tad austere.

yogurt for breakfast.

I sprinkle Grape-Nuts on my sidewalk in the winter to keep people
from slipping on the ice, since they're actually inedible...

Grape Nuts make a good topping for casseroles--any time you would use, for
instance, buttered bread crumbs.
Toss them with a little melted butter first, or spray generously with PAM, and
they will brown nicely.
