Ah, so you *do* still see me!
:)

No free version of Agent anymore, unfortunately. I'm using a pay
version that isn't even archived on their site anymore which I'm
perfectly happy with. All I wanted was filtering and spell check
(which I often forget to use). You can lead a horse to water....

It's because they *don't know* there is an appropriate place to post.
I found most of my subscribed groups because they were mentioned
somewhere else. People have to sift through a lot of chaff to find the
wheat of usenet groups and if they don't have basic knowledge of
usenet, they won't have the motivation to search for something else.

Maybe it is because they know that someone will tell them about
another newsgroup without them having to spend their time looking and
checking out a group. Newsreaders will give you a list of all the
groups your ISP has. Some even allow you to search by key words. Who
knows, you might even find others that are even more to your liking
than the ones suggested here.

Then here is a short lesson on how to find a gazillion groups of any
interest.
go to: www.dejanews.com
in the search field type in any topic/subject/word
It will bring back many posts from all sorts of groups.

take a look under options; posting preferences; spelling and you can
set it so spell-check is automatic when you hit 'send.' it's
sometimes irritating (although you can 'teach' it new words), but it's
good to catch typos or if you have words you chronically misspell (i
have a few).

You don't need a recipe. Just substitute a can of cranberry sauce for the
jar of grape jelly in like quantity.

Okay, I said you don't need a separate recipe, but here's one. This one is
from www.jewish-food.org. There are numerous others on the Internet.

MINI MEATBALLS IN CRANBERRY SAUCE
Yield: 50 - 60 meatballs

2 pounds lean ground beef
1 cup challah bread crumbs
2 large eggs
1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp fresh basil minced
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
SAUCE:

1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
1 1/2 cups chili sauce or catsup
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp sour salt (citric acid) OR:
1 Tbsp lemon juice

In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, bread crumbs, parsley, eggs,
garlic, onion powder, basil and pepper. Mix well but do not overwork or
meat will become tough when cooked. Form into small balls the size of a
walnut or smaller. Place meatballs in a slow oven of 300 degrees F and bake
for 25 minutes.

In the meantime, in a crock pot set at 325 degrees F, mix together the
cranberry sauce (if you so desire, you can use jellied. I prefer the whole
berry.) Add remaining sauce ingredients. When meatballs are baked, transfer
them to the crock pot and stir into the sauce. Cook in crock pot for 1
hour. Lower heat to keep warm for serving

Most recreational cooks are a "social" bunch. They are generally good

Sure, why not? It depends on what you like, same as with most stuff.
They could be especially "good" to a hostess who doesn't much like to
cook * to someone who has to show up somewhere with something and this
doesn't look like too much work or too much thinking.

I don't know who came up with the idea for them but if you think about
something along the lines of Cocktail Meatballs in Sweet & Tangy Sauce,
adding something sweet and fruity (theoretically, anyway) to a jar of
chili sauce to make a sauce for meat-a-balls seems reasonable enough.

I can just about see the origin of the recipe being a Welch's "Tell us
how YOU use Grape Jelly" contest. Or a Heinz, "What's your favorite way
to add zip to Heinz Chili Sauce?" contest. I don't know. But I can see
someone deciding that if chili sauce is a nice accompaniment to a hot
dog, it's not much of a stretch to thin it out and turn it into a wetter
sauce for cocktail meatballs. The combination of the sweet jelly and
the tangy and slightly vinegary chili sauce doesn't sound any worse to
me than any other sweet-sour type sauce. I think it's that most people
only think of sweet spreads as bread spreads or as a component of a
dessert or cookie recipe.

I like fruit butters as bread spreads but really enjoy them (the ones I
make) as condiments: a dollop on the side of a plate to be enjoyed with
a forkful of meat, usually pork or turkey.

And I'll bet they'd be even better with my Cherry Chipotle Relish. '-)

I'll bet you're right, but I don't happen to have any CHerry Chipotle
Relish. ;-)

That's also why I like various chutneys. I like a bit of sweet with some
meats.

Yum! They aren't bad with chili sauce and currant jelly, either.

Val Whitmore started Chili Dog's Kitchen when she was still in
Minneapolis studying criminology (I think that was her major). Nice
woman! She came to the first Twin Cities cook-in in about 1996. Now
she's in Texas.

Yes, I bet that would be good. Years ago in Ohio we had both black and red
currant bushes. My mother would make jelly, but I would make jam. I like
the seeds in it. :-)

I thought maybe it was a high bread/meat ratio, which btw,
ain't such a bad thing. I like em light. I can't deal
with dense meatballs.

I've know a few people to eat catsup as a savory condiment. I've never
met anybody who claims it is anything else. The stuff is really sweet
with a little tang. My wife puts it on hot dogs. I plan to disavow any
knowledge of her.

I fail to see a significant difference between hot dogs with catsup, and
meatballs with grape jelly and chili sauce, except that meatballs taste
a lot better than hot dogs. You are free to disavow me.
