BBQ RULES

We (in Australia) are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is
important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor
cooking activity.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put
into motion:

Routine...

(1) The woman buys the food.

(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.

(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with
the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is
lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

(4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three meter
exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding
activities can take place without the interference of the woman.

Here comes the important part:

5 THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL

More routine...

(6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.

(7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He
thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat

Important again:

(8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine...

(9)The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces,
and brings them to the table.

(10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all:

(11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off."

Upon seeing her annoyed reaction he concludes that there's just no pleasing
some women... <BG>.....

oh hell no. I still get a lot of mileage out of the "I birthed the
babies and then I nursed 'em for years" kinda stuff.
He bought into that division of labor stuff nicely. I cook, he cleans
(but of course he uses the dishwasher..it is more energy efficient than
handwashing.)

You're describing the halcyon days of the US male in the early to mid
sixties. It's much different here now. If I can find the looking glass,
I'll be there with you in wonderland in a jiffy. What's that address
again?

Absolutely a TRUE rendition. . .But, everyone realizes that many men
can only cook if FLAMES, and SWORDS are available. And, a hefty
amount of BUDWEISER.

One question; who goes to work and earns the money that bought all the food,
the kitchen equipment, pays the mortgage, pays for the wardrobe/shoes that's
10 times the size of any man's, and makes the car payments?

If the answer is "the man" then I think he's earned the right to sit back,
drink a beer, and relax without anyone bitching about it.

My brother attempts to refer to this as the "line of death" but we
just laugh at his puny attempts to keep us out of the cooking zone.
He'd never ever be able to enforce a 3m line of death!

It's not about understanding anyone's "place in life", it's about whether or
not one person is the main provider and doesn't deserve to be ridiculed or
belittled for their efforts. If you think this is about splitting chores,
you're wrong. It's about not shitting on someone who puts a roof over your
head. Lastly, if you think working a full-time job is a "chore", I'd suggest
that your "place in life" should be on your knees.

And so you don't think that women contributes as much as a man and even more
??.. The position that a wife and Mother has in the household, the endless
work that she does, the Washing and the ironing that she does for you, to
keep you comfortable, and the entertaining she does for you for business
etc... You are far overpaid then...She is usually worth a lot more than you
ever would be, with that sought of attitude...

I lost my wife 19 years ago and were left with 2 infant children to raise by
myself ..I had to resign from my work to give them a full time parent with
them...I tell you that my work never seemed to finish...The work was
endless...A woman is in most cases overlooked in what they do to raise your
children , etc... That would be the most selfish post of anyone I have ever
read...Talk about an ego...Boy..You have a lot to learn even yet...Provider,
of the roof over her head (not forgetting your kids)...You say working a
'full-time' job that you profess to do...The woman's job is not one that
starts at 9 am and finishes at 5-6 pm..5 days a week... Like you probably
even do or did !!...Hers is a 7 day job arising well before you and cooking
your breakfast and feeding the kids then off to school with the kids ,then
home for washing and ironing (your clothes) and shopping and picking the
kids up etc, etc, etc....ad- nauseous... Your post absolutely disgusts me..I
am sure the women (and the caring men ) would agree with me....

Dear Mrs. DAVLO;,

Jest what kinda beer does your husband drink anyhow? It does sound like he
takes some good care of you but maybe helping each other with the chores
would be a nice way to treat one another. It is sorta odd that his shoes
are so small. A small man with small shoes ordinarily caries around small
tools.

I know three men who had that attitude to one degree or another. They
remained unmarried into their 40's (thought they were ladies men) and
when they did marry, they married for the wrong reasons. Reality hit
and they found out married life was a lot different than they ever
imagined it would be. They also found out that *staying* married was
a complete struggle because women don't put up with that foolishness.
Two of the three are not married anymore and rightfully so. Big ego
and little thought or consideration given to their spouses, but they
still felt sorry for themselves when the Big D hit.

Whoa big fella, take it easy. I don't know why you're generalizing like this
since I just asking a simple question; Who is the main provider for the
household? I never mentioned anything about raising kids - you're bringing
your personal baggage into this without cause.

> I lost my wife 19 years ago and were left with 2 infant children to raise

Sorry for your loss - raising children isn't easy by oneself.

A woman is in most cases overlooked in what they do to raise your
> children , etc...

Don't assume that most fathers are not involved in raising their kids. There
are plenty of us who do as much as our wives on top of working.

That would be the most selfish post of anyone I have ever
> read...Talk about an ego...Boy..You have a lot to learn even
> yet...Provider, of the roof over her head (not forgetting your kids)...You

This is another asumption. I've worked many years at jobs that required
getting up at 5:00 to get to work, working 10 hour days, coming home late,
dirty and tired. This is not unusual. Never did I ask my wife to get up
before me to make me breakfast. Never did I say that raising the kids was
her job. I've changed my fair share of diapers, bathed, fed, cleaned their
clothes, etc.

I object to this notion that women do all this while men "just" go to work
at some job. It was the original poster's contention that women do so much
more than the men, who sit around on our lazy asses. Let me tell you, if
women wanted to provide for themselves and live without the benefit of men
busting their balls at all sorts of shitty jobs they'd stop complaining
about raising children. If you (not "you" personally Barry) hate your kids
so frigging much that taking care of them is a "chore" then your priorities
are out of whack. This bullshit is a new thing with recent generations.
Women didn't complain about this in the past when they worked all day
cooking and taking care of 5-6 kids without the modern conveniences we have
now like supermarkets and two cars per family.

and feeding the kids then off to school with the kids ,then
> home for washing and ironing (your clothes) and shopping and picking the
> kids up etc, etc, etc....ad- nauseous... Your post absolutely disgusts
> me..I am sure the women (and the caring men ) would agree with me....

You make a lot of wrong asumptions about who does what. And even if you are
accurate, you must be nuts if you think that washing, shopping and driving
kids in the comfort of your minivan is remotely comparable to those men who
work 8-10 hours a day busting their humps in jobs like construction,
firefighters, policemen, factory workers, road work, linemen, truckdrivers,
movers, etc. When was the last time a woman died or lost a finger doing
laundry or buying groceries? ****ing ridiculous comparision.

Hey, I earn the money around this place, fella. <hitching up my pants>
<snort, scratch>

Here is a pat on the head and a slap on your ass. Now put that apron
back on and get in the kitchen where you belong, bitch.

How'd I do? With that kind of charm, do you think I will get lucky
tonight? I bet not! LOL

Cute, Becca. Unfortunately though, your analogy doesn't work because at no
time did I promote the attitude you displayed. I don't think that type of
behavior has any place in a relationship, and I asked the simple question of
who provides. If, note the "IF", the answer is "the man", was my comment. IF
the answer is "the woman", the same principle applies. Anyone who provides
as the main breadwinner has a legitimate right to relax if they choose. Male
or female.

What I object to is the prevailing attitude that men have no right to expect
their household to be run in a certain manner while they are the main
provider for the family. If this isn't the case, then my objection doesn't
apply. Quite simple. Nowhere did I suggest the type of chauvinism you
mention.

They tried to play victim, but everyone knew better. Marriage is a

Now come on, Davlo...What other reply would you like to see posted by me
when your post is very clear and easy to understand ...I answered your
question and you did not like it....

Let me let you into my secret ..My attitude was once very similar, but I had
realized over they years that I was very unfair on my wife...I used to come
home each day and sit around after my wife had also worked the day ..She was
a Hairdresser... I handled all the money and directed her as to what to buy
and not buy....Anyway I learnt a lot in the last few years of her life...We
had only 1 child for over 13 years...And then decided to increase the family
...We had 2 others..My wife had cancer and lasted only 16 months with
operation and chemo...She still cooked the meals each day..When she passed
away the 2 young one's were only 4 and 6....I retired from a job that I
loved (Industrial Chemist) and had to become a full time parent...The work
seemed endless... But I loved my kids very much and my raising them gave me
much joy and comfort..Plus piles of work...

So I have experienced over 19 years now being a single Father /Mother ...
The normal male of the species just does not want to know just how and what
the home person does.. No longer come home and putting the feet up..No
Sireee.... Does not matter who brings in the money either the Man or His
Wife...Both are equal in every respect...I only wish I knew as much as I
know now back when Helen was alive...

The same applies as to when I go into a supermarket and see mother's having
difficulties with their kids..I once frowned upon them, now I feel an
empathy for them..There are still some mother's who purposely turn the other
way when the kids play up..and do nothing to calm them...I still frown at
those one's :-)

Davlo..As I said...I answered you as you yourself wrote...There was no other
way I could respond to a message like that...Usually I would just ignore a
post like that, but it got my goat up seeing such a selfish approach to it
....

I did not post to cause any troubles with my original post..I meant it only
as a little lightness that can be included in the kitchen talk <g>.

Bigbazza, thank you for that story. Very touching, and I'm sorry about
the loss of your wife.

There was some show on for a while where people (husbands and wives,
often) would switch lives for a few days. A lot of eyes were opened on
both sides.

At any rate, Davlo has some chip on his shoulder, I don't know why
he's so angry on the subject. The original joke was about the guy
making the steak and was given credit for the whole meal when there
was a lot more work involved. It wasn't about whether the guy can
rest when he gets home from work.

Personally, I wouldn't be interested in marrying someone who thought
they got to boss me around. "I say how much you spend, I say what goes on
around here." Good luck with that. Sounds like how you'd expect to
deal with a maid. Good grief.

Barry, you've got a kindred spirit here.

I only did 11 years as a single Dad/Mum.

And it was *bloody* hard work.

But both my boys have gone onwards and forwards in their lives.

The eldest was on a path to be the local 'deadhead'... smoking dope,
drinking **** all the time and hanging out with his deadshit mates.

I got him back on track through both guile and bribery, got him into an
apprenticeship........and he now owns his own business, is married, has
4 company vehicles, and is in the process of buying his 3rd property.
All in less than 5 years.

Probably why I am still in the relationship I am in now (14 years). I've
been on both sides of the fence.
The other women my SO works with still get freaked out that a 'mere
male' can cook better than them, and are still agog when the SO talks to
me on the phone and 'orders' what she wants for dinner.

(Mind you.... I give her a guide........ "OK, it's chicken
whole/breasts/thighs... how do you want it?" :-)

And probably why I get letters from them asking me when I'm going to
start sending the SO in with the "treats for the office" again!!

And, as was being discussed in a recent thread....... I *do* know how to
load, wash, and empty a dishwasher (or heaven forbid...... do the big
shit by hand!!)....... and I do know better than my SO how to operate
our washing machine!!
I just get her to do the folding.......... I never got the knack of
that!!

LOL!! I walk past and growl......... I learnt from my boys what used to
make them stop and think, and what didn't :-)

Well, as a 15 year Infantry soldier........ yes, I spent a *lot* of time
away from my kids in their formative years. Used to come back from
deployments/exercises after 1-4 months absence....... and the kids
didn't know who I was.

But that was life, and that was my job.

The female in that sort of relationship *has* to go into it with both
eyes open and understand that she can't get hubby to run on home from
work every time that Junior gets a runny nose.

It takes a special breed of woman to be able to cope as a 'single'
Military newlywed with kids........... and a helluva lot don't make the
cut.

> goodness they did away with the draft - It's saved a lot of future

By having them close at hand and available to come on home every time
there's the slightest hiccup??

Doesn't say much for the 'survivability' of that sort of woman.

So sorry you lost your wife, that must have been a very difficult time
for you and the children.

My oldest son went off to college, but he came home for Christmas. While
I cooked dinner, he told me that he learned in school, that many women
work the "Second Shift". His father had no idea what he was talking
about, but I did.

A bloke comes home from work one day. He pulls up short in the driveway;
the place is a mess. Kids toys strewn across the yard, dogs food bowl in
the street, kite stuck upa tree.

He walks upstairs, its even worse inside. Cereal bowl upended on the
carpet, dirty pots on the stove, bottle of red from the previous night
sitting in a potplant.

His wife is sitting on the couch reading the paper and drinking a beer while
the tv runs in the background. Cigarette smoke from a nearby ashtray curls
into the sky.

"What," he says, "the hell is going on here?"

"Well darl" she says "it's like this."

"You know how you come home from work each day and ask me what the bloody
hell I've done all day?"

"Yes." he says.

She says "Well today I didn't do it."
