I suppose it depends on the supermarket, but in those advertising
circulars I get from supermarkets, it usually says no rain checks.

It very rarely says that here. Only when they have a special one-day
sale with extra discounts. Otherwise, all advertised and unadvertised
(shelf discounts) are available for rainchecks.

What you said prompted me to look at the Acme circular
I happen to have sitting here now. Never thought to read the
fine print. Got out my magnifier lens. It says We strive to have
on hand sufficient stock of advertised merchandise. If for any reason
we are out of stock, a Rain Check will be issued blah blah blah.

This isn't the store that prompted my question. On that store ad I
don't see mention one way or another, but on every page it says
Some items not available in some stores. Interesting.

Hmmm! I will have to check again the next time I get those supermarket
circulars.

Stores within a chain will often have somewhat different selections.
That just means that if there's a sale item and the store doesn't
normally stock it, they won't have it.

And with soopermarkets, prices can vary from store to store within the same
locale. The Jewel and Dominick's chains here in Chicawgo do that...and it's
often stores in poorer areas that have the higher prices.

A poster on one of the chi. newsfroups mentioned this, she has a "ghetto
Jewel" near her, prices are higher there than in more prosperous 'hoods...

It can work the other way. The Dominick's in my nabe had sale prices that
were always at least 10% higher than the prices in their circular. This
store was small, and the demographic was "captive", e.g urban seniors and
nascent yuppies who had no cars and no other shopping options in the
immediate area. Mercifully, that rip - off joint burned to the ground two
years ago...

They probably have to charge the ones who pay more to cover for the
ones who steal. They also have more cameras and security guards.

Very true...

Interestingly the Treasure Island down the street (N. Broadway) recently put
all their hard likker in locked cabinets, the manager said shoplifting was a
real problem. It's a pretty affluent area, so. Also they have no modern
security/anti - theft system in place...

The Broadway/Belmont intersection is a big "hub" for all kinds of people,
both good and bad. Last year I was conducting some business at my bank on
the corner there when it was robbed. Very quiet "job", only knew about it
when the teller shouted, "I've been robbed". Police report said "Black
female perp fled on foot south on B'way". This bank has no security guard
and is apparently robbed almost monthly...

There's also a half-way house - type of place for druggy teens across the
way, that has attracted so much riff - raff that the alderman is pressing
for police security cameras for that area. Fine by me...

Aaaaah, urban life...at least the transvestite hookers that plagued this
area 15 or so years ago are gone.
