Default Supermarket rain checks?

Just curious. If they run out of an advertized sale item, do
you get a rain check? Do they even do that anymore?

I never have. Thought of asking today, but I didn't bother.
Hey, I didn't want my Dove ice cream bars to melt!

The "Dreaded" ACME had a 6/$5.00 Pocono Springs (yeah hokey enough to barf)
gallons of spring water but all they had was the distilled.

I asked Sandy about it and for a raincheck. She just HAD to search the
shelf to see for herself, as if I was blind and then wrote me up a
raincheck.

Cute BITCH!!! I must say.

Heh, this wasn't Acme, but the people at this store are *mean* ...
and at this store they are often out of sale items. Come to think of it,
not only were they out of Mentedent, they were out of the sale priced
chicken thighs as well.

Since Albertsons bought the Acme chain however many years ago,
it's so vastly improved that I really don't have problems with them.
On occasion they are out of a sale item, not like it used to be. Not
by a long shot.

Certainly. I get them all the time. Sometimes I prefer them, like if
I want to get more of a sale item than I have time for at the moment.

Interesting. I don't think I'll turn into rain check girl any time soon,
but for places that routinely run out of sale items, I feel like getting
one just because. Thanks.

Nope. Not here anyway - they've gotten clever - all the "sale" items are
advertised as "while stocks last".

Haha! That would be one way around it. I think there are laws
about that here, that you have to have a reasonable supply of whatever
it is you advertise on sale, discontinued items excepted.

But I don't know if that is still true.

Even the radio adverts he Get <insert product here> for 99.99 (or
whatever).... Then the voice tells you all about how good it is, and you
can't live without it etc. etc., - all the while playing irritating
background music - and then *finally* a monotone voice that says
"Subject to our terms and conditions". LOL

Aha! It's the old bait and switch routine. That's illegal here. If
they are concerned they will be wiped out by one buyer, then they
should put a limit on items per person.

I've gotten rain checks.

Never been an issue.

Some stores will also offer an alternate, similar item.

Almost seems I'm the only one who doesn't. Never got one in
my life. I don't notice anyone using them, either, except for one
memorable time years ago. Heh, that would put me off, the trouble
it caused.

Sometimes when they've run out early the store will have a bunch
already made up, so you don't have to wait while they fill it out.

As others have said, sometimes the rainchecks are a good thing. If you
don't need whole chicken at that time, having a raincheck that you can
use in a week or so can be beneficial.

I ask for a rain check maybe once or twice a year. Chicken quarters
are occasionally on sale for a very good price (twenty nine or thirty
nine cents a pound for a ten pound bag) and the store is always out of
stock when I get around to shopping. I can't think of any other sale
item that hasn't been there when I looked for it.

IIRC unless the ad for the item says "subject to stock on hand" or states "X
units at this price" I think they are obligated to give you a rain check.

I have asked recently and Albertsons will give rain checks.

I haven't gotten a rain check in years. Actually I don't recall them being
out of anything I was looking for.

I'm usually so ****ed off that they didn't bother to stock
extra that I can't bear to put all that anger on the poor
assistant manager when asking for the rain check...

Basically, it depends on how good the sale is. If I'm saving a buck or more, I'll get
a rain check...but only if it's something I really would buy otherwise. Most of the
supermarkets around me still do them.
So...which flavor Dove bars do you get??

Heh, I got a steal on them, but I think I should have gotten the
dark chocolate. I got milk chocolate with vanilla ice cream. I just
love their vanilla ice cream. They were 2 boxes for $6. I had 2
75 cent coupons with they (unexpected by me) doubled, so I wound
up with 2 boxes for 3 bucks.

Made up for the missing Mentadent. (laugh)

I get them frequently. My favorite is when I don't really need a sale
item this week, but I would buy it because it's a good price, and i'll
use it eventually. but when i get to the store, it's all sold out.
that's my favorite. Because I can then use the rain check to buy the
item when I actually need it, and now I don't have to take up my
limited space with a stockpile of (whatever it is). My store will
also give a raincheck if they don't have the particular variety i
want. If I want the Skippy chunky, but they only have creamy left,
they'll give a raincheck for that, too. I almost prefer when that
happens.

Unless I'm out or really need that product. Then it annoys me.

I suppose it depends on the supermarket, but in those advertising
circulars I get from supermarkets, it usually says no rain checks.

It very rarely says that here. Only when they have a special one-day
sale with extra discounts. Otherwise, all advertised and unadvertised
(shelf discounts) are available for rainchecks.

What you said prompted me to look at the Acme circular
I happen to have sitting here now. Never thought to read the
fine print. Got out my magnifier lens. It says We strive to have
on hand sufficient stock of advertised merchandise. If for any reason
we are out of stock, a Rain Check will be issued blah blah blah.

This isn't the store that prompted my question. On that store ad I
don't see mention one way or another, but on every page it says
Some items not available in some stores. Interesting.

Stores within a chain will often have somewhat different selections.
That just means that if there's a sale item and the store doesn't
normally stock it, they won't have it.

And with soopermarkets, prices can vary from store to store within the same
locale. The Jewel and Dominick's chains here in Chicawgo do that...and it's
often stores in poorer areas that have the higher prices.

A poster on one of the chi. newsfroups mentioned this, she has a "ghetto
Jewel" near her, prices are higher there than in more prosperous 'hoods...

It can work the other way. The Dominick's in my nabe had sale prices that
were always at least 10% higher than the prices in their circular. This
store was small, and the demographic was "captive", e.g urban seniors and
nascent yuppies who had no cars and no other shopping options in the
immediate area. Mercifully, that rip - off joint burned to the ground two
years ago...

They probably have to charge the ones who pay more to cover for the
ones who steal. They also have more cameras and security guards.

Very true...

Interestingly the Treasure Island down the street (N. Broadway) recently put
all their hard likker in locked cabinets, the manager said shoplifting was a
real problem. It's a pretty affluent area, so. Also they have no modern
security/anti - theft system in place...

The Broadway/Belmont intersection is a big "hub" for all kinds of people,
both good and bad. Last year I was conducting some business at my bank on
the corner there when it was robbed. Very quiet "job", only knew about it
when the teller shouted, "I've been robbed". Police report said "Black
female perp fled on foot south on B'way". This bank has no security guard
and is apparently robbed almost monthly...

There's also a half-way house - type of place for druggy teens across the
way, that has attracted so much riff - raff that the alderman is pressing
for police security cameras for that area. Fine by me...

Aaaaah, urban life...at least the transvestite hookers that plagued this
area 15 or so years ago are gone.

They usually do around here unless the advertisement specifies that
supplies are limited. There have been a lot of complaints in the past of
false advertising, having bargain prices but nothing in stock. Sometimes it
would be a legitimate mistake, the ads were planned in advance but the
goods did not arrive in time, but in a lot of cases it was just false
advertising.

FWIW.... I just made a quick run by bicycle to the grocery store in town. I
was held up at the express checkout for a few minutes while the cashier
made out a rain check for a customer.

Oh no, I figured you had to go to customer service. I don't
see me holding up the line for a rain check.

I do too and it's not a problem getting them. Just ask. They won't
