I never understood why people use steak sauce. The stuff is horrid.
I have always wondered what they put in that stuff to make it taste so
nasty. I have never liked it, I tried all the major brands over the
years, and it's all nasty. I just had a steak at a restaurant and
they had their own brand, so I gave it a try. Blah Yuck !!!!
It's all nasty. Does anyone really like this stuff, and why????

I suspect this is another "De gustibus" but I *like* A1 (and
infrequently HP) sauce on steak!

My favorite is "Sams best". The rumor is that it is made by a company
known for gourmet quality condiments (Kraft). And if you are a shrewd
shopper you can get it in a 5 gallon pail at Sams club with a free pump
dispenser for the pail.

I like it because it reminds me of sauces I might only find in better
industrial restaurants and cafeterias.

It's not my preferred seasoning for beef, but there are times when
you've got a lesser quality steak on your plate and you must smile and
pretend to enjoy it for the sake of keeping the family peace. And that's
when "steak sauce" is useful for helping gag down a dry or tasteless
dinner offering.

The Black Angus used to have a steak sandwich with Jack Daniels steak
sauce. It was really great and boozey. I would love the recipe, if
anyone has it.

Actuallly that sounds rather good but is it a 'steak sauce" or just a
side condiment?

Because it has a nasty bitter taste. I mentioned BBQ sauce because it
tastes good. I may or may not put it on steak, but either way it
tastes good. On the other hand, steak sauce tastes like shit to be
perfectly honest about it. The restaurant I went to was Old Country
Buffet. It's their own name brand on the bottle but the bottle looks
identical to A1 or Worcestershire steak sauce and other squarish brown
bottles, except for the label, and contains the nasty and bitter thick
brown crud.

Of all the replies to this message, no one has yet mentioned what
ingredient is in steak sauce that makes it taste so nasty. Thats why
I posted in the first place. What's in this crud?

Maybe you haven't gotten an answer to your "question" because other people
don't think it tastes nasty.

If you have never liked the "major brands" why would you think some
restaurant brand would be better? I see you mention later it was at The Old
Country Buffet. I have *no* idea why anyone would eat there in the first
place. It's horrid in and of itself.

I don't use it as a condiment, but I sometimes use it as a baste. Mix some
HP sauce with melted margarine and brush it on steaks while cooking. It is
delicious.

I have no idea. But I crave A-1 and Heinz 57. Not on a good steak
tho'; just a tot
between meals every now and then.

I'll bet you've never opened a fresh bottle of Thai fish sauce and
taken a whiff. It's
a perfectly good cooking condiment, but whiffed only you'd probably
want to join me and knock back a tot of steak sauce.

It's a side condiment. But then so is A-1 or any of the other
commerically available steak sauces. I've never known anybody to apply
steak sauce before or during cooking.

Go to Jack Daniel's website. You will find some recipes there.
Personally, I love steak sauce with my steak. When I am in the mood
for A-1, I eat steak :-) I don't each much red meat, though, I prefer
chicken.

Different strokes for different folks. I hate mushrooms, I really
hate coffee (smell and taste) and a bunch of other things that you
might find delicious.

If I had one handy I might read it. I surely wont buy that stuff so
how can I read it. I know it contains some tomato and vinegar, none
of those are bad. There is some strange ingredient that tastes bitter
and once again I am trying to find out. I cant believe this thread
goes on and on and no one can identify the ingredient. It's not hot,
I like hot pepper foods and sauces, it's got a nasty bitter flavor.

You're right. I like both of these and I also like the food at Old

on worcestshire sauce that gives it such a nasty taste?
Let me put it this way, it's not a common ingredient like tomato,
vinegar, salt, or hot pepper. There is some foreign substance.
I have heard that some of these sauces contain anchovies, and those
are pretty nasty, but there is something else. Maybe if someone would
list the ingredients we could get to the bottom of this.

A marinade or dry rub does the job of flavoring steaks here, with the
exception of steak au poivre with demi-glace or chateaubriand with béarnaise.

I always make caramelized onions for steak.

Someone already does list the ingredients. They're on the side of every

A lot of the comments on this topic should have been preceded by
IMHO. I've said that there are steak sauces that I like and I
use Worcester sauce quite frequently but these are personal
preferences.

Not to dispute your information about labels but some of the
ingredients that may make someone dislike a particular sauce are
often hidden in the term "herbs and spices".

And like another poster said, the evil ingredient might be in "spices and
flavouring".

Most people who express a distaste for anchovies are totally unaware that
they appear in worcestershire sauce and a lot of other food products. They
are also unaware that in some Asian cooking, fish sauce (which actually is
kind of vile alone) is used in dishes they like. Their opinions are driven
more by the "yuck" factor of "tiny rotten fishes" than on the taste itself.

There's this sauce in Japan that is similar to a very thick A-1 sauce.
The flavors reminded me of A-1 a lot. I was told that it is put on
rice (kind of like some people use soy sauce here in usa) and that's
what I did. I like it a lot.

I wish I could remember the name. It's a Japanese common condiment
like ketchup.
