Default Steak Sauce = Blah Yuck !!!!!

I never understood why people use steak sauce. The stuff is horrid.
I have always wondered what they put in that stuff to make it taste so
nasty. I have never liked it, I tried all the major brands over the
years, and it's all nasty. I just had a steak at a restaurant and
they had their own brand, so I gave it a try. Blah Yuck !!!!
It's all nasty. Does anyone really like this stuff, and why????

I'll stick to eating my steak with nothing but a little salt and
pepper, or some barbecue sauce if I want a sauce. But steak sauce is
just plain nasty and disgusting. I find it hard to believe anyone
would like it, but apparently some people do becuase they have it at
every restaurant that serves steak.

If you like this nasty stuff, please confess and tell everyone WHY you
like it. Also, what gives it that foul taste?

I don't like steak sauce, but I can tell you, I don't want
barbecue sauce on steak, either. Yuck.

My personal favorite is a 2:1:1 mixture of fresh horseradish, sour cream
and mayo. A little dab will do ya...

Actuallly that sounds rather good but is it a 'steak sauce" or just a
side condiment?

It's a side condiment. But then so is A-1 or any of the other
commerically available steak sauces. I've never known anybody to apply
steak sauce before or during cooking.

I'm not sure if bottled horseradish is what the original poster was using,
but it lasts a long time, many months. When first opened it can be almost
overpowering, it really will clear your sinuses. The "hotness" does diminish
a bit over time, but normally by the time I empty the bottle, it is still
quite potent.

There are several kinds available. I'm talking about the plain prepared
horseradish that is just grated horseradish, vinegar and perhaps salt. There
are other kinds that are diluted with cream and other such things that
aren't so good for using as an ingredient in your own sauce.

The brand I get may be just a regional (Washington, DC) one. It is Double-H,
distributed by a company in Lanham, MD.

i live in silver spring (md), so, yes i see double-h all the time. i
used to buy it to make cocktail sauce, but i haven't bought shrimp in
quite a while. how's their sauerkraut?

Yeah, I meant bottled, not fresh grated roots. But it does mean freshly
bottled. I don't like horseradish that's been opened and kept for more
than a couple of weeks even though you can keep it much longer than that
without poisoning yourself.

My husband works with a guy who also owns a horseradish farm in
Illinois. They process a little of it for their private use and the
gentleman usually gifts my husband with a bottle or two.

Whoah. Fresh opened, it's not wasabi but it's damned close and will
definitely cauterize your sinuses. Nevertheless, after a couple of
weeks of standing in the fridge my daughter will make and consume shrimp
cocktail sauce made with the stuff in the normal "store-broughten"
proportions.

I only buy little bottles of supermarket horseradish because the heat
dwindles so fast.

i was puzzled by this, too. steak sauce is nasty and horrible but
barbeque sauce is o.k.? makes no sense.

for the record, i like heinz 57 on pork chops. steaks if the meat
isn't that good. a-1 is o.k., too.

The Black Angus used to have a steak sandwich with Jack Daniels steak
sauce. It was really great and boozey. I would love the recipe, if
anyone has it.

Go to Jack Daniel's website. You will find some recipes there.
Personally, I love steak sauce with my steak. When I am in the mood
for A-1, I eat steak :-) I don't each much red meat, though, I prefer
chicken.

I'm not insulting anyone. It's my opinion, but that still dont answer
the ingredient that makes it have a nasty bitter taste.

Perhaps it's like asking why m&m candies taste like moose meat: if
nobody else perceives it they're not going to have an answer.

If I had one handy I might read it. I surely wont buy that stuff so
how can I read it. I know it contains some tomato and vinegar, none
of those are bad. There is some strange ingredient that tastes bitter
and once again I am trying to find out. I cant believe this thread
goes on and on and no one can identify the ingredient. It's not hot,
I like hot pepper foods and sauces, it's got a nasty bitter flavor.

Go to a grocery store. Pick up a bottle of steak sauce. Read
ingredients list. Put back on the shelf. Repeat with other brands.

I have no idea. But I crave A-1 and Heinz 57. Not on a good steak
tho'; just a tot
between meals every now and then.

I'll bet you've never opened a fresh bottle of Thai fish sauce and
taken a whiff. It's
a perfectly good cooking condiment, but whiffed only you'd probably
want to join me and knock back a tot of steak sauce.

There's this sauce in Japan that is similar to a very thick A-1 sauce.
The flavors reminded me of A-1 a lot. I was told that it is put on
rice (kind of like some people use soy sauce here in usa) and that's
what I did. I like it a lot.

I wish I could remember the name. It's a Japanese common condiment
like ketchup.

You're right. I like both of these and I also like the food at Old
Country Buffet. I actually like most foods, (with a few exceptions),
but not steak sauce.

Ahhhhhhhh, Yes, its from the worcestshire sauce. But what the heck is
on worcestshire sauce that gives it such a nasty taste?
Let me put it this way, it's not a common ingredient like tomato,
vinegar, salt, or hot pepper. There is some foreign substance.
I have heard that some of these sauces contain anchovies, and those
are pretty nasty, but there is something else. Maybe if someone would
list the ingredients we could get to the bottom of this.

Someone already does list the ingredients. They're on the side of every
bottle. You appear to be the only one with the problem, there is no "we."
