Just celebrating a little.
I used to check out "Good Recipes for Hard Times" by Louise Newton, from the local public library. Then it stopped being available for some reason! There are a lot of very cheap, easy, and good-tasting recipes in there. And now, in my own hands, is a copy that used to belong to a library! Small world, isn't it? I've seen copies of this little 131-page cookbook selling for up to $75 online, so getting one with a few grease stains for less than $20 is well worth a little rejoicing. Huzzah! |

Indeed. The first place I always look, http://abebooks.com, shows 11 copies, and they go up to $125US. Yow. (Their cheapest is $35US.) (A good bookmark for book lovers. International "brokerage" (I guess you'd call it that) for booksellers all over. I've bought books through their members a couple times and was very pleased with the results.) -- Blinky RLU 297263 Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html |

My church has a used book sale every year. Members will donate books, and items will be gleaned from the Friends of the Library book sale. I have gotten some gems from these sales, including a couple Time-Life Foods of the World volumes and a 1943 edition of Joy of Cooking. I usually volunteer at these sales on Saturday mornings so I can case the joint and set aside goodies before the used book dealers descend. Cindy -- C.J. Fuller Delete the obvious to email me |

Congratulations on making it your own. I remember when I used to have some favorite books that were always at the library, didn't need to own them (especially if they were older and out of print!), could just go to the library and check them out for the umpteenth time and then suddenly they weren't there anymore. Did they get lost, were they stolen, sold at their book fair? I'd think "What happened to MY book?" lol!But the joy when you find that LOST book, eh? Kind of like the prodigal son coming home. Oh, and at Amazon, there are 2 copies of this book for only a little under $16 dollars. That's not too bad for a rare out of print book. One book I was looking for for years used to occasionally pop up for $75. I waited 4 years and finally got it for $13! Good thing I'm a patient girl. Melondy |

Goodwill used to hold a big annual book sale. I have collected about twenty Time-Life Foods of the World volumes, Joy of Cooking, numerous church and Junior League cookbooks, The I Hate to Cookbook and the Appendix to the I Hate to Cookbook, the I Hate to Housework Book, Brilliat-Savarin's Physiology of Taste translated and annotated by MFK Fisher, The Art of Cuisine by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec. Cheapist is $35+ And those listed as only $5 at that other site are NOT the same book. They are another book that has an excerpt from Good Times. Melondy |

Could the $5.95 book be either "Not in stock" or possibly another book entirely which contains an excerpt from "Good Recipes for hard times"? Either way, I'm a happy man. I've also discovered that balsamic vinegar is a good thing to sprinkle on beef just before grilling. I imagine the rest of the world has known that for several centuries, but I've just now discovered it. Heh... Karl S. |
