Default We're here in Italy

We made it to Italy on thursday morning. It's really beautiful
weather here in Naples. 50's and 60's, sunny...windy. Beautiful
mountains in the distance viewable from my 3rd floor apartment
balcony. The jet lag rots though.

Wonderful dinner last night at a restaraunt near a friend's house.
For antipasti: Bruschetta and Fried buffalo mozzerella. We had a
mixed grill platter with lots of different grilled meats and I chose a
tomato salad. Finished with a cappucino. I really can't say enough
about the 4 euro per bottle red wine and the buffalo mozzerella (not
fried...). Man that stuff is addictive.

I don't have internet in my apartment yet...using the library on
base. Will have it next week though...

And Italians drive INSANELY.

I'm jealous. Italy is at the top of my travel wish list. I've heard
about Italian driving. Especially along the Amalfi Coast. However, I
understand it is even worse in Turkey!

Oh, I'm sooo glad you popped in to tell us how you're doing! Internet
cafés are cheap, so drop by again. Have you decided not to try
driving yet? It's easy walking and the bus is reliable, isn't it?

don't worry about what is going on except directly in front of you. Just
don't hit anyone or anything. Everyone else will avoid hitting you.

I doubt this approach would work with all the inattentive drivers here in
the US.

Congratulations. You can find decent wine even cheaper sometimes, or in many
places, the house wine is just served in a pitcher placed on the table.
Don't forget the daily dose of gelato too.

Oh my goodness. I love Italy and you are making me wish we were
there. Ditto on the even cheaper wine which is just everywhere, the
gelato probably the same price but to die for, and all that yummy
pasta with a variety of interesting sauces. You can't go wrong in
Italy, imho. Even their pizza is awesome- so different from ours. Oh,
enjoy every moment!! Good luck on the driving. -*vespas zooming by in
the background*- We used public trans portation and did not even rent
a car ever. Walked alot but then we could eat a lot. Loved Firenze!

This was my experience in Spain as well. Wine was listed as 3 euros.
I thought it kind of pricey for a "glass" . When they brought me a
bottle (yes, for 3 euros), I knew I'd found heaven :-) It was very
nice wine too, not at all the plonk one **might** expect.

>Don't forget the daily dose of gelato too.

Now that really IS heaven!

I'm renting a car when we go in March and expect to drive about 600 miles
total. The highways are not so bad, but some of the towns, oh, that will be
a treat.

But the library on base is cheaper yet. My uncle has a friend who lives
in an RV for half the year. They use the library on base, which has
free internet.

I am so happy for you. Have the time of your life! Drive North!
Don't miss anything, especially Tuscany. Sienna, Lucca, places
off the beaten trail. Boboli Gardens, Firenze, ON the beaten
trail but so wonderful. Wish I were there.

yes.

All that cool old stone. The pensiones in villas from the 1400s, the
room windows opening on a central courtyard with what we call
"French" windows, no screens, no bugs, at least in April.

The Market, Mercato ___, in the center of town! All that
fragrant leather, beautiful gold.

Bridge of Sighs.

Ponte Vecchio.

Uffizzi Gallery.

Wayyy up the hill to Boboli Gardens and the old fortress.

Up farther to Fiesole for dinner.

I hope I make it back there one day.

Sounds a great experience. We have going to have our first visit to
Italy starting end of March for a month. The food sounds to die for.
I've always had a strong preference for Italian cooking at home and
restaurants.
We are having 3 nights in Naples, doing our own itinerary working
around the middle two weeks, country farm house stay in Umbria then
Tuscany. Will be spending a few days in Rome and Venice as well. We
only plan to hire a car for the two weeks mentioned above to get to
rail stations etc for day trips. Otherwise, train travel will be
used.
It sounds as though Italy in April is a good time of year to visit,
not so many tourists and not too warm.

Maybe we can catch up with RavenLynne in Naples, will post later to
the date.
If any rfc'ers are going to be Italy in April, we have plenty of room
for another couple in the country house near Assisi in Umbria for a
week.

What will really strike you is how different the cuisine is from region
to region. The Venetians will turn their nose up at Florentines and
sneer "bean eaters!" at them, because so much Florentine food is
based upon ancient peasant fare.

You will be in utter heaven. The very air is softer there. The light is
different. If you love beautiful things, art and just lovely design of
everyday things, plan on spending some time in Tuscany, especially
Florence. I had a month railpass for all of Europe and spend two
solid weeks in Florence (Firenze) in the same pensione.

I took trains and buses all over Tuscany and the Veneto from
Florence. It's a 12-hour train ride to Paris from Florence. I went
alone, not with a group, just used a "Let's Go" to guide me.

Please see Sienna, and climb to the top of the Cathedral, just
keep following the signs that say "Panorama!" And take your
camera. Or perhaps you already have.

I wish!! Honestly, my heart feels squeezed just thinking about the place.

Thanks Cybercat! It sounds as though we will have a lot to fit in,
and should be fun. We plan to do some day walks as well in Umbria.
Florence is on the list as a day trip (or two) from the Tuscany
house.

We'll be in Rosano the last week of March, then off to Venice. The weather
should be high 50's and 60's during the day, maybe hit low 70's at times.
Light jacket, but take an umbrella that time of year. There will be
tourist, but the big crowds don't hit until June. I'm sure you'll enjoy the
stay.

Todi, north of Rome about an hour...worth every minute. Wonderful
place! Views to die for!

my wife and i took an all night bus ride from central turkey to istanbul, we
sat in the very front as that is where there is the least cigarette smoke. i
didn't need to watching what was going on out the front windshield.

first rule i learned was never drive inside the city walls. the old town was
just not designed for cars and parking.

Whatever faults that country may have it is damned civilized to be able to
get a nice bottle of wine for that price.

And not just on the roads. I discovered how motorcycles deal with one way
streets and they want to go the other way. They drive on the sidewalks, and
not slowly.

Hehehe,
this was mentioned in another post! Funny if it wasnt so serious.
that boat was ex Argentina. We were blessed with good weather; our
ship was very small, 4,000tons, so the computerised stabilisers had
their work cut out for them. We had one 25deg. roll which was very
interesting! Otherwise, the whole trip was great - quite an emotional
experience to step inside Mawson's Hut at Commonwealth Bay. also
visited the French Base, Dumont D'Urville, and the Aussie station at
Macquarie Is.
Cheers

Once I was drving in Genoa and took a shortcut by driving the wrong
way on a one-way block. Suddenly - I saw a cop car coming in the
opposite direction. I waived to them, they waved to me and kept on
driving.

We got DSL in our apartment today, so I'll be on when I'm free. As
for the driving, we're buying a car this week, but I can't drive a
manual yet, so until I learn Mr. Raven will be driving.

I hear that it's only really bad in Naples...that if you go anywhere
else in Italy it's not as crazy.
