I was pondering accompaniments to apple pie: Some people like cheddar cheese
with it, others like vanilla ice cream. While so ruminating, I came across this thought: Is there any such thing as cheddar cheese ice cream? A quick Google turned up the fact that Filipinos make an ice cream with chunks of cheddar cheese, which wasn't really what I had envisioned. Then I found a recipe by Gale Gand where the cheese is incorporated into the custard itself: http://www.cooksrecipes.com/dessert/..._recipe.htm l Turns out that that version of cheddar cheese ice cream is primarily intended to accompany apple tarts, so I wasn't all that far off the mark. It strikes me that cheddar-cheese-flavored ice cream could be made even more easily by making a standard ice cream base and adding powdered cheese to it. (My local natural food store sells bulk powdered cheese, and Sandra Lee is continually using the packet from mac & cheese boxes for even more unholy purposes.) It *could* be done. Personally, I have no intention of making such a thing. I prefer my apple pie to be accompanied by any of these other ice creams: vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, rum raisin, maple, or caramel. But I thought someone here might like to try it. Bob |

Yes it could, indeed. Funny, a friend was just asking me today what she could do as a dessert with port salut cheese :-) If I was at a restaurant that featured ANY kind of cheese ice cream, I would *have* to try it. The only issue I can think of is the cheese might not be very tasty served so cold. cheers, Rox |

In Valencia (Spain) this Summer, we found an ice cream parlor with unusual falvors. I tried Gaspacho ice cream (delicious), tortilla de patata ice cream (so-so), lentil stew ice-cream (good), and bell pepper ice cream (very good). Nathalie in Switzerland |
