I suspect you were less deprived, culinarily, than you say. When you
"dined out in style" you were probably learning to enjoy a variety of
food, prepared in a variety of ways. Your mother may well have
encouraged you, by example, to notice the appearance and aromas of the
food, and to explore the combinations of flavors and textures it
offered.

One learns to write by attentive reading as well as writing; to make
music by focused listening as well as performing; to cook by enjoying
eating as well as reading recipes. -aem
