Default What are you doing for Christmas dinner?

Due to our many food allergies, several diabetics in the family and other
food issues, my mom just decided it would be easier for us to go out. We're
having Mexican. I usually get the black bean soup with some modifications
and a dinner salad.

I don't know what sorts of desserts my mom will have. I got some allergen
free iced cookies for Angela. Alas, they have soy in them which I would
prefer not to have. But she doesn't get them all the time so I guess it's
okay. I might have a tiny bite of one. They are VERY sweet!

How about YOU bring what you and Angela can have, and leave your poor mother
alone.

I love black bean soup! Jun made a big pot of it a few days ago. Mmmm!

She won't allow that and there are still multiple other issues. She has
food allergies and my SIL is on a very restrictive diet. Then there is my
picky brother.

Nobody else in this house will eat it so I never make it.

About once a year, back in the 40's, we used to hit a Chinese place on the
west side of Jerome Ave, under the El, probably north of Fordham Rd. Rare
treat during tough times.

It's an old Jewish joke about what do you do on Christmas? ans: Go to a
movie and then eat
Chinese.

It is a strange day for non-christians as you can't really even watch TV .

Why would non-Christians want to watch Christian-derived
Christmas specials?

There's always the NBA triple-header. Christmas is the only day in the
year that I watch NBA games.

We used to do that on Christmas day and/or New Years, but for the most part
we can't eat it now.

Just curious as I don't watch a lot of TV, but why can't you watch it?

I'm not a Christian and I sometimes watch them. Makes no nevermind to me.

I am a non Christian, (Buddhist) but I participate in any sort of good time
or fun that presents itself. If it could be said I "celebrate", that would
be incorrect, as it is more of a folk holiday for me.

I have many friends and relatives for whom it is their holiday, so I do some
gifts and of course any family gatherings or meals. I send rather generic
Xmas cards (Seasons Greetings) and try to enjoy myself as much as possible.

That said, I absolutely hate the barrage of non stop Xmas carols, and the
crass commercialism of the holiday itself. The gift giving has become
overwhelmingly distracting to any meaning the holiday ever had. So most of
my family and friends understand that my gift to them is that they don't
have to give a gift to me. But I do give gifts to grandbabies. Xmas is
best for kids anyway.

For the same reason I watch programs about other religions. Because I find
them interesting, especially Jewish traditions with Hannukah etc. YMMV

Maybe because it's mostly sappy Christmas schlock or infomercials on
that day?

Lots of days like that on TV, many things I'd rather not watch, especially
the news channels, but that's the way it goes. I just don't think one day
stands out as any worse than other days. YMMV.

Fortunately, I don't participate in any of those things anymore. I take what
I love about the season, and leave the rest for those that love that part of
the season. :-)

If I see another car ad with a big red bow or a bunch of cars driving
through snow with weird music i will scream!.. As I cannot remember which
car is being advertised is is a waste of advertisers money. the only one
I like is a chevey ad with the guy who comments that the other guy has cop
hair. I find it amusing.

I guess I never noticed. But then I don't watch much TV.

Hmmm... I haven't seen that.

Then tomorrow the family come to me, and we do a salad buffet based
around a huge ham, followed by the Christmas pudding.

I doubt my bg will twitch on either day... I will have some extra
calories though!

I am doing cider casserole and O'Brian potatoes for breakfast. Never tried
the casserole before. The woman who told me about it said it was some brand
of sausage mixed with chopped onion, chunky applesauce then baked and
reheated the following morning.

I looked up recipes and found more specifics. It is 2 pounds of Sweet
Italian sausage, browned and crumbled, 1 chopped onion, 1 cup of applesauce
(preferably chunky) and 3/4 cup brown sugar (packed). Mix all in a
casserole and bake for 45 minutes at 325 F.

The recipes I saw referred to it as an appetizer and I wondered about the
brown sugar. Perhaps it is there to hold it all together as it bakes?

I made my own variation. Haven't baked it yet but it sure does smell good!
I had 6 pounds of sausage. I bought it at Costco so their packages are
huge. I used half of it so three pounds. Didn't measure my applesauce but
it looked to be about 2 cups. Used three onions in varying sizes from tiny
to small. And just a light sprinkle of the brown sugar over all and mixed
in well.

I may only eat a bite or two. I am not a big sausage lover and in
particular do not like Italian sausage, although the reason I usually don't
like it is that it is very greasy and this stuff was not! Only got about a
Tablespoon (if that) of grease off of it and I cooked it really well. I do
like applesauce and onions but not sure if I like them together.
