Default Cooking Whole Artichokes in Microwave

I have never cooked an artichoke in the microwave, anyone know the easiest
way to do it? They had some really nice large ones on sale 2/$1.00. I
usually cook them on the top of the stove, but really don't want to bother.
:-)

I just started doing this. Works beautifully, too.

Find a container that will hold the chokes standing upright, you may
have to trim off the top of the leaves and bottom bit of the stem. Now
is the time to snip off the sharp ends, if you do that sort of thing.

Rinse the chokes, stand either upright or upside down in container.
I haven't found any difference in the cooking but the upside down
method makes them easier to remove and no surprise pockets of
hot water lurk in the recesses.

You don't need to drain the artichokes, just put them into the container.
Add about 1/2 inch of water and a nice slice of lemon or a small glug
of vinegar, about the same as you would do if cooking them stovetop.
(You can actually add flavorings now, too, such as herbs, spices and
so forth. I'm a purist though.)

Cover the container and microwave anywhere from 4 minutes per artichoke
to 12 for really big ones. This of course depends on your microwave, how
tightly the container is covered and the size of the artichokes. Another
advantage to cooking them upside down is that it is easier to poke the
bottom of the stem to see if it is soft yet. Do so until it is just about soft,
let it sit covered a few minutes and there you are.

Hope it all works for you.

I haven't perfected it yet, but I cut off the top half, spread it out
and place in a covered microvwave dish with an inch or so of water and a
little lemon and nuke til done. The upper/outer leaves tend to dry and
toughen, but it's the part you don't eat. Not attractive though.

I just made them in the microwave, they turned out very good. I'm having one
now, with a bit of mayo and horseradish combined. Pavane and Susan's way
were very much alike, so I think if you try it that way, you can't go wrong.
These were very large artichokes, so I microwaved for 12 minutes. Beats
trying to cook them on the stove top, which takes too much time to suit me.

Mmmm! Looks super-easy and quick - I haven't seen any in the shops
here yet, but I've saved your post for when I do!

Glad that they worked. Here is a very nice artichoke website, in case you
haven't come across it yet. Very authoritative: http://www.oceanmist.com/

Worked beautifully. I haven't had them for awhile, because I just don't like
to mess with them on the stove that often, but now...they're doable anytime
I'm in the mood for one.

Oh, what! How cool, a whole site dedicated to a vegetable I could
do with a whole series of these...

There are quite a few of them, if you play around with Google a bit
you can have a lot of fun. For instance:

asparagus: http://www.asparagusrecipes.net/
spinach: http://www.spinach-recipes.com/
and everything under the sun: http://www.melissas.com/

All sorts of fun.

I love Melissa's! One Christmas I sent her stuff to everyone on my gift
list that lives in another state. Baby vegetables to most people, but a
fruit basket to my one SIL that rarely cooks.
