I have a 4 year old Kenmore dishwasher (model 66516879000).
I need a new motor and pump assembly (approximately $160). Is it worth to repair this (I will do it myself) or buy a new dishwasher. Thanks for any opinions on this |

Was it a top of the line model? If so, it's probably worth it. Otherwise, probably not. A top of the line Kenmore today would cost $900-1100. -- Wayne Boatwright *¿* __________________________________________________ ________________ And if we enter a room full of manure, may we believe in the pony. |

It cost 460 when purchased. It was probably a mid range type of
dishwasher. |

If you were happy with its performance before the motor died, I would probably go ahead and replace it, especially since you won't be paying someone for labor. At 4 year old, you should get at least another 5-6 year out of it. -- Wayne Boatwright *¿* __________________________________________________ ________________ And if we enter a room full of manure, may we believe in the pony. |

Is the $160 the price for the parts alone, or for the cost of the parts plus labor? Does the machine wash the dishes to your liking? Are you planning to get a high-end model or another mid-range dishwasher? Have you checked the price of parts from on-line sources like www.repairclinic.com? I got the most expensive Kitchen-Aid dishwasher about 9 years ago. The motor was bad out of the box and was replaced at no charge. That motor started to go bad about two years later and was replaced under an extended warranty. After that, it has worked well (knock on wood). You might replace the motor and have a decade of carefree use or it might go bad again in a couple of years. If it cleans to your liking and you aren't going to trade-up to a better model, I would lean towards repairing it myself. If it doesn't function well or have the features you like and you are willing to invest in a better model, you might do that. So it is a matter of spend $160 or $1000. |
