I am remodeling my house and now it's getting to the point of selecting
appliances. We will be using a 30" gas range. I need to find a good range hood to match. However, while I don't mind paying premium for a good refrigerator and a range that is used day in day out, I have a hard time paying top dollar for what is basically a blower with a stainless steel housing around it. I don't quite get it, Viking or Thermador's range hood are in the $2000 price range and that does not even include the blower. Relatively speaking, this one: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...atalogId=10053 Arietta 30 In. 400 CFM Wall Mounted "Toscana" Square / Flat Ventilation Hood 400 CFM is on sale at the Expo Design Centers that are going out of business at $270.00 and that includes the blower. What gives? Is there any significant difference? Any comments? Thanks, MC |

I can't speak to the type of range hood you're looking at, but I will say they did strike me as somewhat flimsy and cheap when we were looking. We ended up with a GE Cafe range hood: http://www.geappliances.com/products...oduct_hood.htm And this thing works like a dream and is built like a tank. My brother used to work for GE so I got a bit of a discount, but even so, it's still half the price of the high end range hoods you reference above. We mounted ours right up by the soffitt, where we routed the vent to the exterior, but I think you can buy (at extra $$) whatever other parts you need if you don't have a soffitt to work with for the vent. |

Our Broan Allure III (model #QS330SS) is 1/3 the height and 1/3 the price of the mentioned GE hood (which I do like, if only I had the room). The Allure III is 0.8 sones at its normal 300 CFM speed, and 8 sones at its "turbo" 430 speed. which we need only for high heat searing. At its lowest speed, I can't hear it; at the next speed, I can barely hear it, only because I know I have it on. We're quite happy with it. -- Larry |

I found a Thermador HGSW36TS range hood. Originally priced at $1799. But because it's missing the duct cover in the front as well as the filter (the metal doors) that sits on the underside of the hood, it's marked down to $1299 then to $900 then to $400. And now due to store closing it's 30% off that so it's $280. No returns no exchange no refunds. Have no idea if it works no way to test it. Trying to decide if it's worth the risk. Searched Thermador says it's a discontinued product but I did managed to get a parts list. |

I'd take the risk at that price. I'd probably take the risk even at $400. Thermador is a good brand. |
