Default Brita as softener

(Forgot to x-post here from ac, so multipost it is)

We recently moved (yes, AGAIN -- see
http://wizard.dyndns.org/sandbox/I-ve_lived_here.html)
The water at the new place comes in at 226 ppm TDS at
the tap. Run it through a brand new Brita filter and
it comes out at 112 ppm. I knew the Brita helped with
hardness "somewhat" but I was surprised that it makes
_that_ much of a difference. I'll have to remember to
check once a week or so, and see how that performance
degrades.
