Mrs Martin Luther was a former nun and made a living as a brewster, and
her husband was notoriously partial to beer ... and John Wesley, founder
of the Methodist Church, was known as well as a beer drinker. Because he
wasn't suicidal

The whole 19th-century temperance movement, wrongly seen today as having
been 100% anti-alcohol, was in fact pretty much pro-beer, which was seen
as a healthy, reasonable alternative to spirits (aka the evil). Tea
wasn't affordable yet, and water was a carrier of deadly diseases, so
pretty much everybody, men, women, children, adults, elderly, drank beer
as a staple in their diet, because is was safe bacteriologically
speaking. Granted, it was "small beer", ie. low-gravity brews, then.
