Barbecue (alt.food.barbecue) Discuss barbecue and grilling--southern style "low and slow" smoking of ribs, shoulders and briskets, as well as direct heat grilling of everything from burgers to salmon to vegetables.

Default Grill reviews

Ok - I'm a newbie here.... Checked the FAQ, and there was nothing really
there about reviews on grills. I recently came back off deployment, and my
wife wants to buy me a new grill for a belated fathers day present - I've
seen some reviews... Can anyone point me at some good reviews, or offer
some suggestions? About the only criteria we are using is gas, and under
$1K

Well generally this group is focused more on barbecue vs grilling but
grilling certainly does get discussed here.

I have a gasser sitting beside my 'cue unit (WSM) and for my money you
can't go wrong with a Weber gas model either. I have the Genesis Silver
B. Sat outside year round in the NE US for 6 years and still looks and
performs as new. Customer service can't be beat either.

Glad to have you back.

Good price range. I've not kept up the all the latest models, but for a
good reputation, MHP www.modernhomeproudcts.com Broil Master, Vermont
Castings www.vermontcastings.com or Weber. Pay a visit to your local
propane dealer or outdoor furnishing store for the better models, not the
big discounters.

Yes Yes Yes your right on target......

For the Gasser = Home Depot ( Weber Silver B $499 )
Their version has the porcelain Iron grates made for HDepot

Then WSM for Q ing @ Amazon $199

Oh yes and maybe a Smokey Joe for about $39 anyplace

Then you still have money left over for a pile of meat !!!!!

Welcome home Guy !!

All great advise... If you have an outlet near you, check out BBQ Galore
shops... They sell Webers as well as their own brand, and I've found their
prices are the same and in some cases lower then the big box stores...
Advantage is that all they sell is grills and outdoor cookers... The sales
people actually know what they are talking about..

Thank you and your wife for your service and sacrifice.

I'm curious as to why gas is one of your criteria?

The big reason gas is one of the criteria is her. She likes to cook as much
as I do, and she doesn't have the patience to go with charcoal or wood.

I used to feel the same way. I have always been a gas grill guy.
someone gave me a very small Webber charcoal grill.
I have never cooked a better steak.
for me for now on the only gas I will use is for the quick start option.
you can either wait 10-15 minutes for the coals or 10 -15 minutes for
the gas grill to get hot enough. its much easier to buy coal where I live
and you never run out in the middle of cooking.
you just cant beat coal..

Agreed Ed. There are other reliable choices besides Weber. Consumer Reports
generally have a full blown review of gassers in their June issue.

P.S. - I appreciate you service and sacrifice for the sake of my family's
freedom. Pass it on to your wife as well.
