in enamel-challenged Britain.

Okay, done, got it out of the system now.

We've had a few grilling and BBQ afficianados from your country stop
by on occasion, Graeme used to be a regular. Seems that real BBQing is
a bit of challenge what with the non standard cuts of meat to the
specialized hardware requirements, we all are very impressed with our
cousins overseas who do.

Good show, pip pip and all that.

To many Brits (including myself, up to a couple of years ago) BBQ is
sausages and burgers grilled over charcoal or gas. I got bored with that,
so pushed on.

Since getting into slow-cooked BBQ, and particularly after acquiring a
pellet grill, I have encountered a healthy community of enthusiasts over
here, all of whom are happy to give advice and help.

There is also a growing competition circuit here, although I am not
involved in that, as I tend to cook for pleasure rather than points.

Which brings me back to the name problem. When I talk to friends who
haven't eaten my food yet, and they hear me talk of BBQ, they assume
bangers and burgers, and are not particularly enthused. When I explain that
I am cooking (or trying to cook) "American BBQ", they want to come round.

I know that I am still very low on a steep learning curve. However, my pals
seem to like what I am doing, and whenever I present them with pulled pork,
there is never any left for my supper, darn it!

A lot of people here also use the word "barbecuing" when they are
actually grilling. Grilling is an art in its own right, but it's not
really the same thing as barbecuing.

What difference do you see between a Teppanyaki grill and a Barbeque?

I have a very well used, gas fired Teppanyaki grill in my kitchen. Most
people regard it as an indoor BBQ.

For one thing a teppanyaki is a griddle, not a grill... cooking with a
teppanyaki is no different from cooking with a fry pan.... claiming a
teppanyaki is used for barbeque is like saying a teakettle is a pasta
pot.

If you are using a pellet cooker then 90% of the learning curve is
rendered moot. Fire tending is the difficult skill to learn. The
cooking parts, not so much.

A pellet cooker allows you to concentrate on the meat, biring
injecting and whatnot and not worry about temp spikes, sustained highs
or lows etc. I enjoy the additional challenges myself.

It is a grill you dimwit, labelled as such in both English and Japanese.
When you are participating in international forums it might behove you
to learn the difference in terminology between "grill" and "griddle"
before making a fool of yourself.

Teppanyaki is the Japanese word for BBQ. It is only recent, it started
as a Japanese emulation of the BBQ favoured by occupying US troops after
the end of WW2. It was created by a Japanese restaurant chain purely to
attract westerners.

Do you only open your mouth to change feet?

Completely understand that, and I respect your point of view. My other
cooker is a Weber kettle, which I originally progressed from grilling to
indirect cooking on, and have had great fun with.

However, I am more into playing with the ingredients than tending the fire;
also my cookouts tend to accompany other activities (board-game playing, or
music-making), rather than be an event in their own right. Thus the pellet
grill is idea for me - most of my hard work is in the preparation, before
people arrive (often the previous day), and while my guests are with me,
the pellet grill takes care of things for me, letting me socialise.

Up to very recently, the pellet cookers available in the UK have been much
more basic than those in the States and elsewhere - no electronic
temperature control, just an ordinary 3 way switch - smoke, medium, high.
As a result, it does require a little more nursing than usual, particularly
in cold weather. This is changing with new models coming onto the market -
GMG pellet cookers should be hitting the UK any week, now.

As I am a gadget geek I have been building my own electronic temperature
control, and am having fun with that project, so I will probably continue
with that, rather than by a new one. But they are pretty...
