Default Anyone had Amazon ship them a grill?

After quite a while lurking here and reading various web pages, I decided to
get rid of my Sunbeam gas grill and move up to a Weber Genesis Gold C.
Since I couldn't find a good local outlet, I ordered it from Amazon.

Amazon has shipped it to me using Eagle USA--a company I'm not familiar
with. Can anyone tell me whether Eagle will call me to setup a delivery
time, or if they work like UPS and just show up whenever they're in your
area?

According to tracking, my order left Cincinnati on 7/20 with an estimated
arrival date of 7/27. Based on Amazon's web site, I know I'll have to sign
for the arrival, hence my wondering on how the delivery logistics will work.

Thanks.

We use a company called Eagle for shipping stuff to trade shows, and they're
like Yellow Freight, or Consolidated Freightways, or the rest. If it's the
same one, expect a big semi.

Eagle USA is a shipping company that ships heavy or overly bulky items. We
have large printers sent from Dell and HP and we have never had a problem
with them.

They are mostly used for boxes that UPS and FedEx will not (refuse) to
deliver.

The reason for the long shipping time is because Eagle makes multiple stops
to pick up other bulky items from other buisnesses. Helps them keep costs
down while providing delievery services for bulk items (normally over
100lbs).

I believe, if you have a shipping number and can get a hold of Eagle, they
will
call you when they are within 2 hours of delivery. I used them to ship a
motorcycle from TX to OH.

Worse Case:

End of driveway delivery to the EDGE OF THEIR TRUCK. If you don't have a
loading dock at your house capable of meeting the back of a semi, not their
problem. You will need to figure out how to get it down without damaging it
and how to get it to your house.

Best Case:

Driver wheels it up the driveway on his handtruck and delivers it to your
front door, with a"'howdy ma'm" and a toothy smile.

Most Likely Case:

Driver stands at the end of your driveway bitching about these deliveries,
helps you lower it to the ground and waits patiently for his $20 tip. At
which point he'll help you load it into your truck or wheel it to your
garage.

I had my snowblower delivered this way. I freaked out when I fully
understood what I had bought (I won't do it again) and figure $20 smooths
most wounds.

Thanks for your input. I should know better on Tuesday. I'll report back
here for the future reference of others. Here's the transaction sequence so
far:

I ordered the Weber Genesis Gold C from Amazon on Saturday night.

According to an email I received, they "shipped" it on Monday. (Very
prompt!) They gave me a tracking number with Eagle USA.

The package showed up in Eagle's system on Wednesday when they picked it up.
(Not sure if Amazon had to ship it to a location for Eagle to get it, or if
the Monday shipping report really meant that they requested pickup. Either
way, no big deal.) The Eagle system shows that they expect to deliver it on
Tuesday of the following week.

Friday I get a call from Eagle. After first suspecting it was a
telemarketer I realized that they were calling to setup delivery. They
wanted to deliver on Wednesday, but I wasn't going to be home. They said
they'd come Tuesday. They offered to call before coming, but I said that
wouldn't be necessary.

The only other "interesting" part is that my grill has been in Atlanta
(according to the tracking system) since Thursday. I live in Pensacola, FL
(about 5 hours away). Maybe they actually run the truck from there. (I
figured it would come to Pensacola and go out from there.)

BTW, I'm not planning to tip the driver. I don't tip UPS, Fedex, etc., so I
wouldn't expect that in this situation. Hopefully, that's OK.

The box is 150#, so worst-case scenario, I can handle it myself once it
comes off the truck.

Use your discretion. The obligation of the trucker ends by getting the
merchandise to the tailgate of the truck. It that is all he does and stands
there while you bust your ass, no tip. OTOH, if he wheels it into the
garage or onto your patio, he is going above and beyond. I'd offer him an
iced tea and slip him a five or ten.

I concur. They delivered the K7 when I was out of town. The old guy felt sorry
for SWMBO. Backed the truck up to the garage. Got it on a dolly, then down with
the lift gate. Somehow they managed to get it thru the garage and across the
yard to the patio. I told her to slip him $25 and a Styrofoam cooler of Cokes.

Consider tipping the driver. I had a Kamado delivered, and for a $50
tip, he helped me set it up on my patio. I had a wine storage unit
delivered, and for $40, two guys set it up in my kitchen. I had a 35" TV
delivered, and for $40, the delivery guy installed it in my
entertainment center.

I'm not sure if I was clear about this in my last post. It is YOUR job to
get it off the truck. He only has to get it to the tail. You may luck out
and get a truck with a lift gate. Or you may not.

I've contacted Amazon about this since they are the supplier. Every time
I've placed an order with Amazon or other suppliers, they were responsible
for delivery of the item to my door. As you state, that may not be the case
here, so I've asked the supplier to clarify this.

As a layman not aware of the policies of the shipping industry, I would
expect that if some special effort were required in receiving this order, I
would be told by the supplier. Up until I received the confirmation email
from Amazon, I thought that they would ship the item UPS (which is how other
large items I've ordered from them have arrived). Although apparently I am
wrong, I would have expected that it is the role of the shipper in
situations like these to at minimum offload the item from their truck, with
responsibility passing when that is done.

Nonetheless, assuming the driver parks his truck right in front of my house,
it's about 50' from where he'll park to the ultimate resting place for the
item. I'll manage no matter what. At this point my curiousity is piqued
about what I should expect in this situation.
