Default Offset grate height ?

hi all,

I am welding up an offset smoker. Getting about time to weld the
firebox to cook chamber and put legs and wheels on it and frame up the
bottom. Just wondering what is a good cooking grate height for an
offset. Anyone have a tape measure handy? 18x18x18 1/4 thick
firebox, 36x20 3/16 thick cook chamber.

Thanks!!
Kevin

I've got a 20" diameter cook chamber same as yours, the cooking grate is
about 9.5" up. I imagine it's set down just abit for the hinge and lip
overlap and all. The firebox hole is triangular and about 6" across the
bottom by 4" high.

I'm sorry, I don't think I made my question clear. I would like to
know the height of cooking grate to ground. Like 36 inches from grate
to ground? Just doing a little ergonomic research. I have not seen
many offset smokers except on the web. Hard to scale dimensions from
some of the pics.

Thanks!
Kevin

Gotcha, the Stanley Powerlock was still handy, 30" from the ground. That's
the grate in the main chamber I measured from ground level. It's a little
low, but I'm 77".

Kevin I think more to your personal desires should be the question. I'd say
roughly waist height. For example, I'm about 6'1" and the kitchen counters are
fine for me. SWMBO is about 5'1" and hates them.

Thanks!

Anyone else? Maybe someone with a Klose or similar offset smoker?

<snip>

The grates in my NB Silver are 32.5" from the ground. It seems to be
a good height for working with the food. I'm 6' tall. YMMV.
