Default Barbecue? In NEW YORK CITY?!?! Part 0

Okay, so here is a mini review of a meal I had at Bubby's restaurant
in New York.

I had asked folks in alt.food.barbecue for any suggestions of BBQ in
NY and someone suggested Bubby's (http://www.bubbys.com/) as they have
some "real" bbq (slow smoked) on their menu.

I went to their Brooklyn location this last sunday for lunch and
here's what I found:

1st, unfortunately on Sunday they serve their brunch menu on which
their Pulled Pork Sandwich is the only bbq available. On theirregular
menu they also have ribs and chicken.

I ordered a cup of chees grits as an appetizer and the pulled pork
sandwich.

The cheese grits were pretty good. Lots of good sharp cheddar cheese
melted into the grits. The grits were firm (not overcooked as usual
in restaurants) . The only hot sauce they has was Tabasco :-( but
still all in all the grits passed muster.

Next came the Pulled Pork Sandwich. The plate came with a good sized
pile of pork with house cut french fries and the bun on the side. The
pork was clearly slow-cooked and pulled in large chunks. The
bartender (I was eating at the bar to avoid a long wait for a table)
brought two squeeze bottles of sauce. The first was a orange-red bbq
sauce that I thought tasted like a sweet, spiced ketchup. It was a
little too ketchupy for me. The second bottle contained what tasted
like a sweet, low-acid vinegar sauce....no heat that I icould
discern.

The pork was juicy, tasty but did not have much smoke flavor. The
meat tasted like it had had a slight dash of the sweet vinegar sauce
applied when it was dished onto the plate The bun was housemade and
moist and tasty. Th fries were good and not over salted.

All in all, I'd say that they ALMOST had it. They had cooked the pork
well and slow and served it up pulled the way I like it, I would have
just had them get a little more smoke on that meat. Also I would have
liked either more choices in sauce or a less ketchupy sauce.

Heh. In an earlier thread I had indicated that I wished I had time to
go upstate to Dinosaur. I have their cookbook and it seems like a
place I'd like and that they do 'cue right...

Maybe next trip.

[ABF crosspost removed]

I'd heard (um, somewhere) that it's illegal to vent wood smoke
in NYC. Is that not / no longer the case?
