Health 'hazards' of smoking food ?
Not to be all alarmist or anything, but does anyone know of any research in to the long-term effects of eating smoked food ? I got a Webber bullet for Christmas and needless to say, I've been eating a lot of smoked delactables lately ! The thought was that if there are toxins in cigarette smoke, then there are likely some kind of toxins in wood smoke.... Now, before anyone get's their flame-throwers out, I amd NOT implying that consuming smoked food is at all like smoking cigarettes (I doubt that anyone could eat enough BBQ to come close to the same levels). Regardless, on some minute level, there has to be something that gets into the food and I was curious. Anyone ? Gotta go mop my chickens.... -- Mark (remove the obvious to reply) |

I've never seen any credible evidence that this is true when smoking with specific woods that are not chemically treated. And don't forget, we're not talking about breathing the smoke -- Reg email: RegForte (at) (that free MS email service) (dot) com |

I smoked for 50 years. I've eaten grilled and smoked food

Take it easy, enjoy things you like in moderation and have a good time. Life's too short to live in fear of the carcinogen of the day. |

I hear ya -loud and clear. There's no way I'm NOT going to smoke food (I'm even trying to become more proficient so I can do it more often !). Besides, you can go crazy worrying aobut his kind of thing and then you're not paying attention and get hit by a bus. Health 'hazards' of smoking food ?
I have seen some studies that suggest that there may be some carcinogens in
meat that has been smoked. However, the studies that I have seen were funded by groups like Center for Science in the Public Interest and other what I call wacko anti-meat groups. If my memory serves, a good look at the data was done by Steve Miloy who does research on junk science data. Again, if I am remebering correctly, it has been a few years, the raw data seemed to show that the toxins were at around the same levels as most vegitables. What I do remember for sure was after reading his stuff I went out and fired up the grill! ag |

According to this article: http://cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/3_25.htm grilling muscle meats over high heat (200-250* Celsius) caused carcinogens to form. Barbecuing - cooking over low heat - produced negligible amounts. -- Aloha, Nathan Lau San Jose, CA #include <std.disclaimer> |

Yeh Steve, that's what I say. What's all this got to
do with cooking good grub? Something is going to kill you. Maybe it'll be old age.Maybe it'll be something else. In any case you don't have anythng to say about it. M&M |

Mark, I just posted a msg that said more or less the
same thing. I'm 67 and 'Hound' died at 52. Go figure. I doubt that Hound violated more health rules that I have. M&M |

Woah....hang-on there friend. Just because you're not following my thought process (or perhaps I'm not explaining it well) is no reason to jump to (false) conclusions. I suspected that asking this may have led down this path. Forget it, I'm sorry I ever mentioned it. Peace, love & BBQ -- Mark (remove the obvious to reply) |
