Thanks for the suggestions, but our route didn't allow me to sample
some of the places suggested.

My favorite NC BBQ was at Luella's in Ashville. Some of the best ribs
I've had, St Louis style. I wasn't impressed with the brisket, but
everyone loved the ribs, turkey and pulled pork. We aren't normally
vinegar sauce folks either, but enjoyed the sauce. Daughter liked the
mac&cheese. The Brunswick stew was ok, not great but not awful. We
learned of Cheerwine here and are new fans. This is a picnic table
type affair with friendly and efficient service.

Next was Little Pigs across from Ashville High School. Fatty babybacks
swimming in a tomato based sauce. Their fried chicken and mustard
sauce were great. Cole slaw was ok.I'd return to taste the chopped
pork and more chicken.

Blowing Smoke in Savannah:
Awful. The service was friendly but far from efficient. Seemed I knew
more about what they had than the waitress. Ribs were too mushy,
falling off the bone just from picking it up. Steamed or maybe over
steamed. The pulled pork was tasteless to us. Brunswick stew had
little taste and should have been billed as light soup instead.
Daughter wasn't impressed with the mac/cheese.

Williams BBQ about 25 miles north of Albany on GA300
Very tasty pecan smoked St. Louis style ribs. This is a take out place
along the road. No way you could eat in front of this place as the
flies would carry you away. They serve the ribs on white bread with a
tangy tomato based sauce - Rib Sandwich style. The ribs were cooked
just right for my liking. Slight tug. Worth the stop if on GA300.

After this trip I have a new respect for St. Louis style ribs. I
usually do babybacks, but the longer skinny ribs seem to have more
flavor. I also like the texture better. I will be trying to experiment
with vinegar sauces to see what I can can up with.

Some local Ashville folks suggested 12 Bones, as this is where Obama
went. I heard they cook non-traditional NC BBQ, so with my limited
time we didn't go. The waiter from Luella's did say that their 'naked'
ribs weren't bad.

Well I hope this info is useful to someone out there and again thanks
for the suggestions.

Thanks for the reviews, I do feel you totally missed finding out what
Carolina bbq is all about, which is whole hog or pork shoulder cooked over
coals derived from burning wood down to coals. Not at all knocking your
taste for ribs with sauce as that is my up bringing.

Craig,
Just using your post as a teaching tool. Not jumping on you.
What I did above was what Craig should have done with his post,
reviewed the original text and 'snipped' out what was overkill.
Folks, please 'snip' your postings original text. Keep just enough to
be able to see only as much of the original text that is pertinent to your
reply.
