Default Weber Chimney Starter

This may me a silly newbie question but here goes - is there any useful
purpose for the pivoting wire handle-thingie that leans against the
insulated handle and always seems like a potential burn hazard to me?

I use it to improve control while pouring out the hot charcoal.

It's not for no reason that Weber sell mitts... But for me, I use it to poor
the briquettes safely.
